Do you carry ID with you?

A thread in the Doctor Who forum has brought up this question, and I'm wondering what people think. I always have my ID on me. Granted, my ID is my driver's license, so I pretty much have to have it on me anytime I leave the house. I frankly don't understand why anyone wouldn't have their ID on them just in case they need it. I just keep mine in my wallet (which I also always have on me); that way it's always there.

Do you carry your ID with you everywhere you go? If not, why not?

But seriously, I always try and carry on me in some form my passport and driver's licence. Just a force of habit.

I bet I know which thread this question came from. I always take my DL. From store to store, there's always a difference about how they'll take my debit card. Probably about 1/4 of them will ask to see my DL to verify it's me.

Generally, not so much. My primary form of ID would be my driving licence (Which doesn't have a photo on it in any case).

It's usually just because I forget to pick it up. Here, it usually isn't that necessary anyway.

I guess I just don't know why you would remove cards from your wallet. That's just where they go! I'd probably lose them otherwise.

I mean, obviously it's a bad idea to carry one's Social Security card. I hope no one here does that. That's practically screaming "STEAL MY IDENTITY!" I have mine locked in my safe deposit box. As for stuff like credit cards, medical insurance cards, etc., why would I want those? They get left in my desk drawer and only taken out when I need them. I travel light.

Credit/Debit cards: I have one of each, and I never really know when I'm going to be stopping somewhere to buy something. Even if I just happen to need gas or something, it's nice to always have.

I guess I just like to play it safe. I never want to be unprepared. It's the same reason I wear a watch, or why I always carry a pen.

I never carry ID with me I end up losing the cards etc, heck I'd probaly lose my watch if it wasnt attached to my wrist.

Only when I know I'm going to need it, applying for credit, opening a bank account, etc. or passport for travelling, which I don't really do anyway. Otherwise I've never needed to have ID on me.

I do carry my drivers license. Although I am 33 I often get asked for ID when I buy alcohol, which I do with great regularity, and drivers licenses are photo ID in the UK.

My wallet contains 2 credit cards, 1 debit card, a card about my heard condition, my NI card (because I can never remember the number and would lose it otherwise), and my unlimited cinema pass... none of which would work as ID... In the UK there's no need for a medical insurance card.

So they don't ask you if you're over 21

I carry mine since I am so young looking and people always ask to see my ID.

I worked in an ER in college, doing patient admitting. We couldn't turn you away (although some private hospitals can). However, it all came down to billing. You didn't have your insurance card, and we put you in as a cash paying patient.

Me? I'd rather have that insurance card around. They do rummage through your wallet, if you are unresponsive, and there's no one to tell us who you are. If we see an insurance card, we'll use that as a starting point for billing.

Trust me - you'd rather have them start with an insurance company, then start coming after you!

You're right, if you show up without money or proof of insurance, they'll do just barely enough to ensure you don't die that day, then kick you out.
