They were soft reboots.
TNG takes place far in the future with a completely different aesthetic, different aliens and frankly is largely a different style of show from TOS.

TMP was absolutely designed to be a soft reboot of TOS, Roddenberry's novelisation of the film even goes as far to say "Actually TOS is basically nonsense propaganda and TMP is what it always looked like"

TNG and TMP were entitled to change things because it moved into a new time period. They (generally speaking) avoided contradicting what came before, sometimes directly connecting to TOS (as in Khan).

Discovery runs over a time period that we've already seen and does it differently. That's far more of a reboot.

Of course it is. It was a new version of Trek informed by Roddenberry's changing views and ideas. Setting it 100 years in the "future " was no different than placing it in a parallel universe.

TNG reimagined every single piece of every single item in complete and total ways (aeshetically) and hid the soft reboot with the "lots of time has gone by!" plot device while explaining none of it in-universe. It was a different style of show completely - about the only mutually commonly used plot device is "Captains log, stardate...."
 
TNG reused everything from the TOS films. None of it was reimagined. They were simply older ships that are still in use, and uniforms that Starfleet used to wear, including Picard. They frequently used the Starbase model from the TOS films. They also carried over the designs and costumes for aliens, like the Klingons.

And all of this continued on throughout the spinoff series. Nothing was reimagined.

Communicators. Tricorders. Phasers. The Klingons. All reimagined. They reuse the movie ships because it was cheaper than creating new ones. Realistically those ships should have been put out to pasture.
 
The Klingons are the same, wear the same uniforms, and fly the same ships. One of them is even played by Worf, pretending to be grandpa Worf.

Then we have all those returning cast members...Sarek, Spock, Scotty, Sulu, McCoy, etc. These TOS film era designs continued being used through DS9 and Voyager. They didn't just use the old models. They built NEW cg versions of them. When they showed TOS era tricorders and phasers, were they reimagined?

It's a sequel series, tied into the older series and especially the movies, depicting the aesthetics of both as if they are actual history. Nothing was redesigned.

Given the reaction to any "change" is this surprising?

BTW, TOS films used TNG sets. Just saying :techman:
