Do you actively convert people?

Do you put effort into getting your friends and family to watch your favorite shows? Or do you just watch what you watch and don't really think about other people?

I am currently in the process of making my family watch "Chuck."

I have also created a lot BSG, Firefly, and Farscape fans out of people who don't even like science fiction. I'm very good. :p

Not -very- actively. I did get a friend hooked on Six Feet Under and Queer as Folk though. In return she introduced me to I, Claudius and we'll probably be watching The Wire.

Back when I was in college I gained some Buffy converts as well.

No, I could care less if people I know watch the same shows I do...which is limited these days anyway.

Occasionally and then only with exceptional shows and when i know my friends like it.

I was the first to see Firefly and can proudly say that i'm responsible for maybe a dozen DVD sets bought including some other Firefly merchandise.

Currently i've given a girlfrield of mine the first two seasons of Big Bang theory but then she's caught up in playing Dragon Age excessively so it may take a while before she watches it (she liked the pilot though).

No. I'm reluctant to even recommend movies.

If they don't like something I like I'll either for bad for wasting their time or dislike them for not having better taste.

I tell friends about stuff that I think they would like, but I don't push the topic if they aren't interested.

I often tell friends and family about TV shows that I think they might like, or lend them DVDs but I just basically point them at the shows and let them decide for themselves.

I try! I made my sister watch the new Star Trek movie on DVD, and she definitely doesn't watch stuff like that, I saw her laughing at the funny parts, and she said it was an OK movie ;)

I recommend things to people I think might like them. I don't really "evangelize" or anything, though. If someone tries it out and it's not their cup of tea, so be it.

This.
I don't push them too hard, or make them watch the shows. I just suggest things they ought to check out. I know what people will actually like (or not like), so if I recommend a show to a particular person, they know they can rely that the recommendation is a pretty good one. It is just a matter of how long they wait before they check it out.

^OMG! A mr.coaster sighting!

Like Bob the Skutter said, I have a few close friends to whom I would recommend shows. I know their tastes and might give or lend DVDs to them. I have a friend who is fascinated by time travel and alternate time-lines. I have sent her "Life on Mars" and "LOST", to name a few, knowing that she will love them as much, if not more, than I did. But I don't pester her about it. She loves Sci Fi but doesn't get out much or have many nerd-friends, except for me me and my hubby. :D

I mention things or recommend they watch it, but I don't force people to watch it or bring it up every time we meet.

If people want recommendations, I'll offer up suggestions, but I really don't care if people watch the same shows as I do. Just like I may think someone is an idiot for watching Voyager or Smallville, but I won't put together an intervention to make him or her stop watching.

I mention shows every so often - Lost, Dexter, Chuck - but don't push it. I find that people don't always have tastes too much like mine.

And is it really a good idea to try to get your fiance to watch "my favorite show," Dexter? He might decide to back out of the whole deal. :rommie:

But mainly I don't push it because he always wants me to watch the kind of low-brow comedy shows he likes - Married With Children, King of Queens - feh! Gimmee serial killers over that muck any day.

In some cases for me it's usually a trade-off. For example, I made my best friend watch BSG (which, at the time, was only in the middle of Season 2), Farscape, and Firefly. He, in turn, made me watch Buffy and Angel.

I'm always a bit wary of suggesting shows to people, because I'm afraid I'll annoy them. I have a couple of friends who will not shut up about certain shows they think I should watch - not based on what I like from TV, but from what they like. So I tend to worry about inadvertently annoying other people the way that annoys me.

The one exception is if I think a friend who writes fanfic for one of my fandoms might be inspired by another. Because then I'll get more fic. I'll run the risk of being obnoxious if I might get good fic out of it.:p

I'm more often the converted than the converter; a co-worker of mine has successively gotten me hooked on Firefly, Buffy, and Angel; another co-worker got me hooked on Deadwood. I got my mom and my brother both hooked on Firefly (I think mom liked it because of the western aspects; the only other sci-fi she likes is "that one Star Trek movie with the whales"), and I got my brother hooked on NYPD Blue.
