Do we have an identifiable Twelfth Doctor Theme?

Perhaps we were spoiled by the ubiquitous "I Am the Doctor" over the past few years, but I can't think of a clear theme for this Doctor. Have I missed something? Perhaps this was deliberate?

Yes, there is a theme for Twelve:

That's the big action version we hear when the Doctor is saving the day or making a triumphant speech, but we've heard the same core melody in a quieter mode for his more dramatic moments (as you briefly hear at the end of that clip).

It's a good theme. I admit, I got a little tired of "I Am The Doctor" after a while, but I do find I prefer it more often than not.

Either way, having become an avid collector of the modern Who soundtracks, I'll look forward to adding Series 8 to my collection whenever it's finally released.

As an aside, I'd love it if they'd include the Series 7 theme on one of the albums. So far, it hasn't been released in any official capacity that I'm aware of and it's disappointing, as it's one of my favorite renditions of the main theme.

Yeah, the Twelfth Doctor theme is starting to grow on me. Though it didn't stand out as much as I am the Doctor at the start, by the end of the season it definitely was the musical identity of the character.

And while I'm okay with each individual Doctor having their own theme, I really would like it if they also had one theme to represent the Doctor, regardless of incarnation. Something like the "Flavia theme" in RTD's era which was used for both Eccleston and Tennant, though Tennant also had his own exclusive themes like The Doctor Forever or All the Strange, Strange Creatures.

Spoiled by "I Am the Doctor"? As in, it was such a great theme? Bum bum bum, bum bum bum bum I don't get that. It was interesting once, Bum bum bum, bum bum bum bum but after a while it got annoying.

They didn't need to use in Bum bum bum, bum bum bum bum episode. It got to the point where Bum bum bum, bum bum bum bum anything else. I mean, we missed Bum bum bum, bum bum bum bum Bum bum bum, bum bum bum bum Bum bum bum, bum bum bum bum!

I am the Doctor was a pretty good tune, but I agree towards the end of Smith's run I certainly was getting sick of it. Day of the Doctor was probably ruined the tune for me.

Honestly, after the rampant music reuse in "Day of the Doctor", I expected them to just reuse "I Am The Doctor" and other old music in the future rather than have Murray create anything new.

I'm glad the producers managed to find some taste between then & S8.

^Reusing music isn't about taste, it's about money. Presumably their music budget ran out by the time of the anniversary specials, so they had to recycle. But a new season comes with a new budget. Look at Star Trek or any '60s or '70s show. They'd have original scores for maybe the first third or half of the season, then recycle that music for the rest of the season, then start over with new scores in the following season.

I was willing to accept that at the time (although that would have been a poor use of the budget in my book - reuse music during the season so they can afford new stuff during the special!), but it turns out the Day of the Doctor soundtrack has a lot of music that went unused in lieu of reused tracks in the actual episode.

Yeah, sort of how they decided to replace Vader's cool entrance to the Tantive IV in A New Hope with the Imperial March. That's a move that watered down the march for its grand debut in The Empire Strikes Back.

As for budget, they could easily get someone else besides Murray Gold to do the music for much less money. Bring in some originality.

That has not happened-except on maybe a fan edit. The music has remained the same despite all the other changes.

Interestingly, The Empire Strikes Back is an interesting case of music restraint-despite having the best score, it's still interesting how much the movie doesn't use music. There are scenes such as the first part of the battle with Vader which did have a full score written by Williams but are silent in the final film. The Imperial march was also going to be introduced in the film earlier, when the Star Destroyer drops the probes, and the reveal of the Imperial fleet would've had a faster-paced, louder version of the theme then the finished film. But that's really going a bit off-topic.

I recognised the new Doctor theme but I couldn't hum it off the top of my head like I could for all the others. Music has been really neglected this year - nothing really stood out. very bland and very boring soundtrack... loved it when they brought back the cyberman theme though!

I'm a big fan of I Am the Doctor and don't really think of it as a Matt Smith theme, but it's nice to see new music as well.

Yeah, that's weird. I wonder if we'll find out the full story there.

The music in Dark Water and Death in Heaven stood out much more than the rest of the season. Very curious to see what Gold releases on S8 soundtrack.
