Novels set earlier, like The Captain’s Daughter don’t clash and actually slot nicely between the cowardly useless Harriman from Generations and his slightly older (and competent) self in Gods and Men.
Uhura (who retired at the end of Gods) and Chekov are both still alive and active in Starfleet in novels set just before Nemesis – making them about the same age as Admiral Archer must have been in the new Star Trek.
Besides, arguing over which ‘actually’ happened is silly – they were both erased by Nero in the new Trek film anyway ;-)
