Do people really like condiments that much?

Everytime I go to Subway, I have to make sure they go light on the condiments, usually honey mustard. If I don't, they will just slather so much all over the sandwich to the point where it becomes the only thing you can taste. I think it's gross.

Today I forgot to tell them, and of course they drenched the sandwich. Why do they do this? Is it normal? Do most people really like that much honey mustard (or whatever) all over their sandwich? There was so much that it dripped out the other end. A turkey sandwich shouldn't be so messy!

Haven't noticed it so much with mustard, but Subway is horrible about slathering ungodly amounts of mayonaise over everything.

I always ask for just a really small amount, and their idea of a small amount of mayo is still a ton!

Wendy's is another bad x-tra mayo offender!

I like a light spread of spicy mustard. The deli in my building does a great job with this. I agree, I don't want my food slathered with it. I want it to enhance the flavor, not dominate it.

Thundercloud Subs here in Austin take an ice cream scooper (I kid you not) and slap a big ole dollup of guacamole on their sandwiches.

But I agree about the mayonnaise thing. A little mayo is fine, and lot is...just yucky. What I generally do is ask for the sandwich without mayo, and then ask for mayo on the side. Yes, they think I'm nuts, but eh, I don't care.

I'm a fan of a lot of condiments. I prefer too much rather than not enough.

I do pay for it as I end up with some of it on my shirt, pants and face. Nothing like a glorious beard with oozing liquid in it.

I like condiments, but nowhere near what fast food restaurants glop onto my food. Yeah, Wendy's is bad for it, so is our Subway. The worst, however, is our Sonic. I love Sonic, but these guys pour a bucket of mayo all over my cheeseburger, and if I ask for no mayo (I don't like it), I still get mayo, again, slathered all over the burger. Geh.

Subway is the only chain-restaurant I ever go to, but -and apparently I should be thankful for that- here they don't over-do the condiments, I sometimes even have to ask for more of that deliciously hot and spicy mustard they have

I wonder if it's some regional/cultural thing and you happen to be in a part of the world where most customers like their sarnies drenched in mayo/mustard/ketchup/whatever

Talking about condiments, I'm always befuddled about salad dressings. I may enjoy a spoon of the stuff in my salad once in a while, but you really like your salad drenched in that?

Must be my upbringing, but to me the only reasonable condiments for a salad are salt, olive oil and vinegar. Sometimes balsamic vinegar, if I feel like that.

I love Subway's "veggie delite" sub, but I usually have to give them an entire speech about how little mustard I want, or they drown the thing in it.

This is why I avoid Subway like the plague. Every time I get a sandwich there, no matter what type of meat I get, the whole thing tastes like nothing but mustard.

Togos is far superior, IMO.

Ugh, the ubiquitous of mayonnaise is the bane of my dining out existence. The other day, for example, I ordered a crab cake sandwich at a pub and it came out with a bun slathered in mayo.

Who the hell puts mayo on a crab cake? Crab cakes have mayo in them. Fortunately in this instance I was able to ignore it rather than send it back, as I don't eat the bun anyway, but still.

I'm sure that the slathering of Mayo and Ranch is just one example of many as to why so many are overweight.

I have to tell the 'sandwhich artist' to only give me 2-3 passes and I get light mayo at that. Same for any condiment. One time I got distracted with a buddy and my Onion Chicken Teriyaki sub became the sauce with a few speed bumps along the way.

I love Sonic

I'll fully admit to being a bit of a food snob. There's nothing more beautiful to me than a perfectly prepared charcuterie plate. Steak tartar is one of the most wonderful dishes in the world.

But, yes, when I'm coming home from a late meeting, I will fully admit to stopping at McDonald's and ordering a Quarter Pounder with Cheese and some fries. I have no shame in that.

But to say that you love Sonic? Holy God! That company's food is just above McDonald's and Burger King, maybe roughly on par with Wendy's, and for nearly double the price! And even at that, it's still awful! I mean, it's acceptable "OK, I need some cheap and dirty carbs now" stuff, but ... my Lord! You could be cooking far better for far cheaper in your kitchen! Come to the light, man!

I hate mayo and tomatoes and it seems like every place I go wants to put them on my food. At least, the guy in the deli downstairs kept trying to put those on my sandwiches. I've told him enough times that he knows I only want that spicy mustard--and boy, is it spicy. Just the way I like it.

I really don't get the appeal of mayo on anything, to be honest, but then most people find my fascination with mustard weird, too.
