Do NASCAR and other gas wasting events need to go?

To me they're a waste of gas, but to someone who enjoys those things they're not. I don't see how you could outlaw those activities without stepping on their rights. Nascar is paying for the gas it uses, it's not like it's funded with taxpayer money.

If this gas crisis continues much longer, I fear the American public is going to go all Road Warrior and start to wage war on the freeways for a tank of juice. Never have I seen more exaggeration and paranoia in my life, except for my previous sentence.

I've already purchased crossbows, a dune buggy, some S&M leathers, and gotten an orange mohawk in preparation for the hard times to come.

I don't know how much gas/oil Nascar uses on an annual basis but if things get bad enough could gas-guzzling events be a thing of the past? Things like The Blue Angels and monster truck rally events are all just entertainment. If we cut them out would it make a lick of difference? If not, how bad would things have to get before we would ban such events? Would rednecks survive?

Discuss if you please.

I think the cost of maintaining a display team like the Blue Angels is rather insignificant compared to the total US defense budget.

I have stocked up on dynamite charges that I can fire using a bow and arrow. Want to ally forces?

Its not about 'budget' its about symbolism. Wanting to look like we are doing 'everything' in our power. There has been a trial ballon sent up that congress get invovled in Post Office operations and end Saturday delivery of mail. Not taking into account the postal unions contracts and the displacement that the will suddenly occur should the service no longer need the 20% of its workers needed to keep 6 day a week deliveries.

Okay. Now all we need is a little feral kid and a gyrocopter and we're good to go.

The media loves this "crisis" we're in right now. It keeps people glued to the news, waiting to hear about the next price increase. And hey, by the way, here's a word from our sponsor.

If it's all about symbolism, I think there are better places to start.
The Blue Angels pilots will have to fly a specific number of hours a year (in order to remain in active duty), so whether they fly regular exercises or train for (and perform) aerobatic displays, it doesn't really matter.

I know this is some serious Necro-Posting, but I feel that it should be noted that Monster Trucks dont run on Gasoline, they run on Methanol-Alcohol

So much more can be done by lowering the speed limit on state and federal highways from 70/75 to 60/65 or even 55/60. TONS and TONS of gasoline can be saved that way.
We tried that back in the '70s and '80s -- the infamous "double nickels." Nobody liked it.

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned the potential follow-on effects from such a change, which could obviously significantly outweigh the infinitesimal direct savings. If NASCAR is seen to be taking steps of its own accord to reduce fuel consumption, that could well encourage Joe Revhead to do likewise. Alternatively if the change is perceived to be driven by external pressure then it could well backfire and solidify reflexive opposition to energy efficiency measures. Ethics notwithstanding I'd still lean towards it being a waste of time, but it's something to think about.

Compared to the rest of the U.S., it's a thimble from a lake.

Compared to China it even less.

Well NASCAR specifically should go simply because it is the most boring racing sport ever conceived and formula one kicks it's circular ass.

.
Are you kidding F1 is more follow the leader Than NASCAR, at least there is passing on the track in NASCAR.

...Likewise, if other sports can afford to pay their athletes millions, I'm sure gas is going to stay in NASCAR's price range for a long, long time.
Unical was NASCAR's fuel supplier from 1948-2003 the price range was perfect, it was FREE, SUNOCO the current supplier has a 10-year agreement (it expires in 2014) to do the same.

Was this satire?

Like mentioned above, just stop fans from going to Nascar, NFL, NBA, NHL, NCAA, WWF, etc.. and then you'll see true fuel savings.

Note I didn't mention MLB.. banning their fans would only keep home about 20 people per game.
