Do members of your family look alike?

Right now, no. But my dad pulled out a picture of himself when he was the same age as me, and we looked exactly alike. If I played football, and you took a football picture of me and faded and crumpled it up, you wouldn't be able to tell which one was mine and which was his.

My mother claims that I look like her father, but I don't see it. (I'll get out the only photo I have of my grandfather later and scan it.)

Oh, there are some pretty interesting resemblances in my family...

For one, almost EVERY descendant of my paternal great-grandmother has her eyes, including me.

But the weird stuff comes in on my mother's side. Some traits have an odd habit, it seems, of skipping and appearing on opposite sides of the family.

I seem, for instance, to have a VERY disproportionate amount of DNA from my maternal grandfather. So many things in my appearance, personality, even medical profile, are straight from him that it's scary. And NONE of these traits manifest in my mother (nor, for that matter, my dad or his family), yet magically decided to make a dramatic appearance in me.

It gets even funnier when you bring my first cousin into the picture, on that side of the family. If all you could see were the mothers, you'd think that the two of us got swapped somehow: I look like my aunt, and my cousin looks like my mom. When you bring in the fathers, though, it becomes clear who belongs to who--but without that, I can almost guarantee people would get it wrong.

(Oh, and to whoever posted that pic of the two cousin kings--that is creepy! I'm going to bring that out next time anyone says the Macet/Dukat cousin theory that's been established in the Treklit is too preposterous or soap opera like...I mean, look what happens in real life!)

None of my family members really look alike. I'm guessing many on my dad's side do, but I don't know them, so I can't be sure.

I don't look much like either of my parents. My younger sister looks somewhat like my dad, but not a lot. She and I look a bit alike, but not a lot. My older sister has my mother's eyes, but that's it. For my younger sister, mother, and I, it's our bodies that look more alike -- hourglass figures, thick legs, petite -- not our faces. I've often been told by strangers about my family that you can tell we're related, but that we don't look alike, if that makes sense.

The family resemblance didn't end with George V and Nicholas II but continued with George V's grandson, Prince Michael of Kent (who is a first cousin, twice removed to Nicholas)

And another photo of George and Nicholas standing together

George and Nicholas were cousins through their mothers who were both daughters of King Christian IX of Denmark. George's mother was Princess Alexandra (later Queen Alexandra of Great Britain) while Nicholas's mother was Princess Dagmar (Empress Maria Feidorovna of Russia, the wife of Tsar Alexander II).

They don't look that similar to me. It is mostly the style of beard that grants them the resemblance.

I think that they are have the same shaped nose, their eyes are similar, as are their ears and eyebrows.

The only real difference is that George V is a bit plumper than Nicholas.

I'm told I'm the spitting image of my father when he was my age. My brothers and I also share a lot of resemblacne, though they all have more attributes of my mother.

My father was the spitting image of his father, I was (until puberty) the spitting image of my father. I call my son mini-me. He is the absolute spitting image of me. Funny thing about me though, during puberty and on wards I began to change and assumed characteristics from my mothers side of the family to where I can see a strong resemblance between us. IN fact when I compare her high school senior portrait to mine, its eerie.

I'm not sure. My younger brother and I grew up having people tell us that we either look exactly the same as our mother or father. They don't even look alike at all.

we've got a couple of family traits on my dad's side that almost everyone has (large, sort of dreamy brown eyes, fine, wavy hair, straight, dark eyebrows, and oval face shape) except one of my aunts. I pretty much look like my dad, always have. my brother OTOH is like a spitting image of my mom's side -- with full lips, a paler complexion, and stick straight hair. it's like I came all out on the side of my dad and then my brother evened it out.

Everyone says our daughter looks exactly like I did at that age, and strangers quickly identify us as related, but I see a lot of DH in her, too. And DH's dad says that her eyes are the exact color of his mother's eyes. (Mystery solved! LOL) Our son looks just like DH -- same bone structure and facial feature shapes -- but he's fair like I am, though he wound up with blue eyes, which neither of us have.

One of my sisters looks identical to our dad's sister (our aunt) at the same age. Another sister heavily favors our mom, though she has the freckles from my dad's side. The third sister has our mom's facial structure and our dad's coloring without the freckles. I'm adopted, so I have to take a pass on this round. ;)

Now, here's a good one: back in the early 90s, I was working in retail. A woman checked out at my counter, and she had the same last name as I did (my maiden name). We talked a little about it because she had done some geneology research, and as we were talking about the family split a few generations ago, her husband walked up to her. Other than being about six inches shorter, he looked almost EXACTLY like my father. It was just eerie.

I love genetics. :)

At my uncle's funeral, people who knew him were shocked to see my Dad--who looked just like him but only 5'6", not 6'. Years later, my Dad's niece bearly burst into tears after seeing my Dad for the first time in years--they looked so much alike.

When Dad was on jury duty in downtown Los Angeles (so there's literally thousands of people in the courthouses), a co-worker of mine was also on jury duty. I told my co-worker to look for my Dad (male, 30yrs older than me, 6" taller than me, but otherwise just like me). Out of all the people walking down the hallway, my coworker introduced himself to Dad. Picked out by a total stranger among hundreds. Yeah, I'm my father's daughter.

My brother and a girl cousin look uncannily alike.

Now, Hubby's family...

Just last week, Hubby and I were at Barnes & Noble (a chain of bookstores) and the cashier looked at my last name and asked if I was related to J--- (I have a bro-in-law with that name). I asked (pointing at Hubby), "Does he look alot like that guy right there?" "Yes."

Years ago, when Hubby and I were taking a test for a job with Caltrans in Fresno (where three of Hubby's siblings work), the lady checking ids at the door took one look at Hubby and said, "You must be one of the ***** boys, which one are you?" "I'm the oldest." "You're the only one I've never met."

Hubby's poor siblings. He was the oldest of 6 kids and a very good student, and all the teachers knew without looking at names who that sibling was--and that they were expected to measure up to the oldest.

Let's see. Immediate family is obvious and pretty easy to tell. Both my brothers (and myself) strongly resemble my Dad. My youngest brother has blue eyes and slightly lighter hair, like my mom (my hair isn't at all like my Dad's, so I would assume it comes from my mother's side).

As for cousins, uncles, aunts, etc. My mother was adopted, so I really have no idea about her side of the family. For the cousin's on my father's side, it's hard to tell since they're all girls. With 2 of them, you would probably believe we're related if you're told, but I don't know if you could tell just by looking (dark hair, face generally shaped the same, but that's about it).

My dad has 5 siblings. The two oldest brothers look fairly similar to him, the sisters not so much, and the youngest brother likes to joke that he's really the son of the mailman. In old pictures, my Uncles do look a lot like me, it's just weird that they don't look close anymore.

While I have so much from each parent that I don't really look like either one, two of my sisters look very similar, but also SOUND almost identical on the phone.

My mom and all her sisters look really alike. I personally feel that i look nothing at all like my brothers. I know they are my brothers though, since we all have the same wicked temper hiding under the surface.

My mom and I look so much alike it's scary. Same eyes, smile, laugh, voice, etc. The only thing that's different is our body shapes. My mom is kind of pear shaped. I'm more like my biological father's sisters, I'm a classic hourglass.

My family really seems to put their mark on their children. I've noticed how lots of people in my family look a lot alike. My husband's family on the other hand is just weird (in comparison) because I can hardly ever make anyone look like their parents or siblings. Just the roll of the dice I guess.
