I am 19 and I love new technology but only good technology.
The LCD and plasma are inferior in power consumption, cost, durability and may have superior resolution but do I really want to see the make up smudges and wrinkles of hollywood celebrities,do I really need to see the plastic surgery lines in high resolution?

Actually, LCD tvs will consume less power than comparable CRTs, but CRTs can easily kick their asses in terms of resolution. We've been able to make CRTs that can reach 1080p resolutions (and better) since the mid-90s.

LCDs may be flat and low-power, but in terms of picture quality, CRTs are still undefeated.

Agreed, and if I could actually get a HD 42" TV (and it wouldn't take up half the room) I would have bought it instead of the plasma I now have...

Tell me about it. The TV I replaced with my 42" LCD was a 32" Sony WEGA flatscreen at it was huge and HEAVY. It weighed about 160 lbs. My LCD, only 75 lbs and is only 11" thick and that's with the base. The screen is only 8" thick. Yeah, a nice large HD CRT would be nice, but you'd have to build onto your house just to have room for it.

And do I really need the volume at 110 db AT 100 Watts to ruin my hearing?
Room and speaker acoustics are more important then sheer watts.

Oh com'on!!! You're a freakin' kid!!! What teen-ager doesn't like his tunes loud?
Right, because all teenagers are clearly the same and all of them clearly only listen to very loud, very bad music, er, "tunes". Clearly. Then again, I'm 21, so I suppose you can disqualify me since I'm no longer a "freakin' kid!!!".

Why are you responding to a reply to STARTREK11?

Guys, guys, guys, let's take a step back, okay? Johnny, not all kids are the same. Yeah, we may think what they're listening to is noise, but our parents thought the same about what we listened to as kids. Don't forget that.

Let's just leave this where it is and get back to the subject, okay?

Terri, I'm soon to be 34 and I STILL listen to that noise. In fact, that noise that I used to listen to seems a bit too old school now and I've graduated up to the next level of noise.

The point I was trying to make above was that I can't believe that all youngsters don't like their music loud.

Darkman,

I rep for Panasonic plasmas, and the power consumption is roughly the power of a 120w light blub so it small compaired to DLP/LiFi type sets, and no more burn in,because of anti-image retention feature.
See www.panasonic.com for more Info.

Sorry bucky... Even the 42" uses and wopping 578W.. The I had samsung used in it's high power mode used almost 650W.. you could see the heatblume coming off of it when it was on.. And, pans 58" it's 745W I don't know where you are getting 150W

My 42" plasma isn't a Panasonic, it's an LG, but the specs say in use power consumption is 294W and stand by is 3W.

Even so, 294 is waaaay higher then the 120 he is talking about

True enough, but my TV is also a cheap, year old model. They have less power hungry, newer models out now. Maybe not as low as some technologies, CRT even, but they are getting less power intensive.

Do they make some sort of upconverter for satellite signal, or do I have to drop the coin and go with DISH HD?

One question I don't see addressed and would love the experts and experienced to comment on:

Power consumption.

I've heard the plasmas draw a lot of power compared to CRTs and other new tech. If I'm home, the TV's on...and I'm not a nature lover...
I can't afford to see my power bill jump up just because of a new set.

TIA for the replys!

Power consumption is comparable to a CRT until you get to the uber-large screen sizes (58" and above), then it skyrockets. So, you're good as far as plasma power usage. It's LCD that's the standout, but not with unusually high power usage, but unusually small power usage. It's the only one of the three that routinely gets Energy Star compliance.

I just bought my HDTV, its a 37", and quite frankly the 37" LCDs have better pictures than the larger LCDs I've seen, at least for now. I had a chance to buy a 42" plasma for the same price as the LCD, but I figured the LCD would last longer and consume less power (200 watts!!). Also, since my wife hates surround sound (grumble) I went with a TV with "enhanced" sound. I compared it to other models in the size range and wow, the sound almost seems like a 75 watt system rather than 20. Its also only 45 pounds and 4" wide...it'll fit anywhere! As for advice, contrast ratio for LCD TVs are improving, as is response time. I'd go with an LCD over plasma anytime.

As for the CRT controversy, YES they have a better overall picture, but when you take into consideration: size, weight, placement, expandability...you just can't beat flat screens. Combine that with HD channels, my TV always looks better than CRT to me.
