News Disney's Live Action Mulan

I, um...I guess it was just okay? It had some good moments, but for the most part it all felt rather empty to me. There's some variety, but mostly it just remakes scenes from the animated movie with less skill. And it can't seem to decide whether it wants to be a "more realistic" take or a more fanciful one. It's all over the place, and rarely exciting.

One change I quite liked though was
rather than Mulan being found out, she comes forward on her own.

The Calvary is indeed in the movie.
Cavalry, not Calvary. :)

I get the symbolism of taking off her armour but there is a reason people wear it. Hell, it’s what kept her alive. :)

That worked for me, it only slowed her down and held her back physically as she was more nimble without it.

It's kind of how I'm not fond of armouring up Batman in the movies. He's like a ninja, he doesn't need it.

In all honesty, I've had that opinion about all the live action versions I've seen--I have not seen Beauty and the Beast however.
Possible controversial opinion time: comparing the animated vs. Live action, while inevitable, is also not helpful. While I didn't fully enjoy Beauty and the Beast, it brought out some wonderful character details that an animated film won't. Same with Aladdin.

It's hard I know but I want to treat Mulan as it's own thing.

When I saw the trailer, I thought that Disney wanted to make a Chinese style period war movie based on the Mulan legend, not a full remake of the animation. I was actually happy about that. Was I wrong??

I really really liked it!

I’m really happy they decided not to remake the animated movie because this was awesome!

I also really liked that Mulan decided to stop hiding rather than being found out.

Hearing the instrumental of Reflection throughout was so beautiful. The fight scenes were really spectacular too!

Having Christina Aguilera reprise Reflection for the end credits was really nice too.

Hold up... Ming Na cameo!? Who was she in this?

At the very end. She is the one who introduces Mulan to Emperor Li at the ceremony

I didn't expect how close this would hew to the animated one either. It subs out a few characters for others, and drops the songs...but it is pretty much a basic beat for beat remake of the animated one.

Disappointing.

...to clarify my post a bit, it's not on the level of The Lion King (which felt almost shot-for-shot a lot of the time) but if you've seen the animated Mulan, you've seen 90% of the live action one.

I saw the Lion King as more of a tech demo than a real original movie. "Here is what animation can look like now".

That is more in line with the original ballad.
Unlike the ballad though...
Mulan does not reveal her subterfuge after retiring from a long military career, in the film she reveals herself at almost the exact same point in the story where animated Mulan was found out.

So the Chinese government have now forbidden their media to cover the film because of the revelation that Disney collaborated with the people running the Uighur concentration camps while making it.

Which just goes to show no matter how much time you spend on your knees sucking commie cock, you'll still be the one getting fucked in the end.
