News Disney's Live Action Mulan

Man... i think this movie will tank...which is a shame. Mulan, Black Widoe and Wonder Woman would have made 2020 the year of the woman action hero, and those combined numbers would help open up some doors.

Now..... :(

Restricting access to just Disney +, and an added fee, ...and then saying it will be free soon enough (right when one of these other movies comes out, right?). Man... what are they thinking???

I'm a little surprised they announced that it will be free in December already, I would have thought they'd wait until after it came out. That way everybody who really wanted to see it would have already paid for it.

I'm going to assume that they think people are going to be impatient and want to see it anyway.

Given the current market and lack of new releases that might not be an unreasonable assumption. Personally, I think they just can't make up their minds as to what fits the market better. It's a confusing time.

So i watched it

Mediocre - at best unfortunately. The movie can't really decide if it wants to be a Chinese Epic, a simple action film, a female empowerment movie or anything else.

It just plods along, the movie never actually makes me care about the characters and the action is not jaw dropping at all. If you want a great Martial Arts movie with strong female fighters go see Crouching Tiger, Hero or House of the Flying Daggers, this movie can't hold a candle to any of these.

Now this may be due to the animated movie being so beloved and the movie keeps close enough to the animated movie with some bits and pieces changed and the introduction of a female villain that brings some supernatural magic to the movie but even her story is not that interesting (basically the evil version of Mulan).

Now my biggest gripe and i'll probably be torn to pieces for it - the movie just sledgehammers the viewers with the message of female empowerment. Nearly every scene hammers home the message and it culminates near the end when the female villain turns sides and "empowers" Mulan to defeat them by being a strong woman (at this point i almost turned off the movie but instead fast forwarded the last few minutes).

I really am a big fan of strong women and i wish Hollywood would get over itself fully and give women more central roles on and off the screen but it has to come naturally like in the movies i mentioned above (everybody knows the awesome female fight in Crouching Tiger between Michelle Yeo and Zhang Ziyi) but Mulan just pile drives it into the audience at every turn possible.

Watched it but i'm in no rush to rewatch it anytime soon if at all.

Both of the reviews I saw for it were good.
At this point, I wouldn't trust IMDB when comes to anything with any kind of feminist direction.

RT's viewer score is in the same ballpark while critics scores are in the mid 80s.

I don't give a crap about professional critics opinions, they're not anymore valid as mine or your opinion.

The Metacritic user score is a 3.4/10 vs a 64/100 for the critics. Look through the user reviews on both sites, I'm seeing the same basic complaints, that it's boring, and has lost almost all of the personality that the animated movie had.

So what I'm getting here is that you're a sexist.

;) Sorry, couldn't resist, I've been on the receiving end of this for real and it's no fun

Two of the reviewers I watch on Youtube kinda said the same thing. This was a souless movie, like a lot of the other Disney Live Action films. I'll probably still see it in December, but I'm not rushing to pay the 30 on top of my subscription to see it now.

I watched it with my brother, sister and parents. Much cheaper than a night out at the movies, and less virus to worry about as well.

I liked it! I have minimal recollection of the movie (saw it at the movies when it originally came out) so I can't really compare it, but every one of us really enjoyed it. Not a 10/10 movie, by any means, but 7/10 I'd say, which there's nothing wrong at all with.

I get the symbolism of taking off her armour but there is a reason people wear it. Hell, it’s what kept her alive. :)
I enjoyed it. I liked the Ming-Na Wen cameo. The Calvary is indeed in the movie. Had no idea that was Jet Li. Saw his name in the credits and said “I bet he’s the Emperor” and he was.

In all honesty, I've had that opinion about all the live action versions I've seen--I have not seen Beauty and the Beast however.
