Will Disney Make 'Frozen 2'?

In terms of worldwide grosses, Frozen has grossed $763 million worldwide, the 50th biggest grosser of all-time. Of films that have earned as much or more, only 2012 ($765m), E.T. ($792m), Inception ($825m), The Lion King ($987m), and Titanic $2.16b) have no sequels either in current existence on in active development. For the record, sequels for Independence Day, Alice In Wonderland, and Avatar are currently in development. Point being, nearly every single film that has earned the grosses on the level of Frozen has received a theatrical sequel or prequel. If Disney walks away from a theoretical Frozen 2, it will be a big deal simply because not making a sequel after an original makes this level of money is all-but-unprecedented.

This is not about whether there should be a theatrical Frozen 2, from an artistic point of view. There surely can be more stories to tell as the kingdom comes to terms with Elsa’s “totally not a metaphor for homosexuality” ice powers, as well as how the two mostly separated sisters adjust to actually be in each others’ lives again. But financially speaking, under pretty much any other circumstances, a theatrical sequel to Frozen would already be scheduled for Thanksgiving 2016 or 2017. That is what makes a discussion about Frozen 2 somewhat unique. With any other studio, a sequel to a film like Frozen, which doesn’t remotely close off potential for further storytelling (as opposed to something like Titanic, The Passion of the Christ, or 2012), it would be a foregone conclusion.

If done right, another story from Arendelle could be excellent. We could see what happens when Elsa gets dumped... :ouch:

CHANCELLOR: " A gift from Arendelle, majesty..."

KING: "Why it's a giant ice sculpture...:wtf: why is my son frozen in the center of it!!!!?"

CHANCELLOR: "Wasn't he in arendelle to break it off with the Queen, your majesty?"

My mom heard me watching it, and swore it was the same woman.
I was amazed how well all of the languages fit the music, and how well it flowed together.

‘Frozen’ Sing-Along Edition Debuts in Theaters January 31

Frozen audiences are invited to join the act — literally — as more than 1,000 theaters nationwide introduce an all-new sing-along version of Disney’s Oscar®-nominated, Golden Globe®-winning big-screen adventure beginning Jan. 31, 2014.

‘Frozen fans have embraced the film’s original songs and its soundtrack with such passion — there are countless YouTube videos from people singing songs like “Let It Go” — we decided to create a version that would celebrate that enthusiasm,’ said Dave Hollis, executive vice president, theatrical distribution, The Walt Disney Studios. ‘It’s a great opportunity for families to get together and have some fun with these songs.’

According to Hollis, on-screen lyrics and a magical bouncing snowflake will accompany select showings; moviegoers can check local listings for showtimes and theaters. The duration of the sing-along run will vary by theater.

I think this proves once and for all that Frozen has become a real phenomenon.

^ If the release makes some coin, I'll agree. It is, of course, a money-making gimmick. But if people go and enjoy it, then hey ... it's a win-win.

There certainly are worse movies to turn into gimmicks. At least Frozen is a quality movie that doesn't force its main characters into decades-old molds.

I understand that several of the foreign singers were picked for having played Elphaba in their country's translation of Wicked, so somebody else had already done a lot of the dubbers' casting work for them.

Just got back from the Movies and Frozen absolutely shocked me. I remember watching the first teaser and I think it was Olif and Sven trying to cross the pond. I thought this was going to be another Disney kids movie. Then last night I saw a parody of the song Let it Go featuring Star Trek: First Contact (from Lily's perspective if you have seen the movie or care about such things) and it motivated me to finally check out this movie. Boy I'm glad I did. The story and the music reminded me of Disney's golden Era (Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast) and it was almost like being 5 again.

Also, watching this movie, I'm a big fan of the Disneyland Resort and I couldn't help but think how awesome a World of Color segment would be (And I know they did one for the holidays) featuring this movie. Just imagine the fountains going during the chorus of "Let it Go" and I think it would be spectacular, in the only way Disney knows how.

I love this...

I saw that last night. Another reason to motivate me to go see this movie. I wonder if they had done Frozen with World of Color in mind because there were parts of the film that felt like it.

I attempted borrow someone's child yesterday so that I could go see "Frozen." Taking a child with me seems less weird than a grown man seeing a Disney movie by himself. :p

Don't be embarrassed by that. I wasn't. If you want to see the movie, than see the movie.

I must admit I've found having a niece to be convenient in this respect.
