Disney remaking THX-1138

The Wormhole

Fleet Admiral

So, in an apparent desire to milk their ownership of Lucasfilm to its fullest possible extent, Disney is making plans to remake THX-1138 aiming for a 2018 release date. No word yet on cast or anything like that, though one trusted source indicates Orci is involved, as he does seem to have his hands in every Hollywood pie these days. Source:

April Fools!

So who fell for it? I was debating whether I should make this the joke or an announcement that Disney is remaking American Graffiti, starring all their young "talent" but after checking with some people I knew, they believed THK-1138 would make the better joke.

Might have worked better if "April Fools!" wasn't right there, in bold.

Let 'em dangle for a minute, put "April Fools!" in spoiler code.

pro-tip: Remaking American Graffiti would have been more believable, given that it was actually popular.

Yeah, THX was flop-a-rama. I don't think LucasFilm existed as an entity for THX and Graffiti. Thread title sounded like a hoax as soon as I read it. Nice try, though. Howard the Duck might have been a better choice.

I did. Nice one!

Yeah, I actually read "April Fools" before I read anything else because it was in bold.

So, no, I did not fall for it.

Lucas actually did make a "Special edition" or rather, "Director's Cut" for the film's DVD/Blu-ray release, featuring like with the SEs, some new footage and CGI FX. Not sure if the original theatrical version was included on any discs though (Like with Spielberg's films).

A Howard the Duck/Rocket Rocket buddy comedy could be a massive hit.

The thread title got me, I'll admit. Though I did wonder "what, a remake that inevitably sexes it all up? Wouldn't that just be The Island again?!"

Would it have the same impact and appeal today?

Oh, and I saw this in the theater. But I couldn't figure out why Richie Cunningham was dating Shirley Feeny.

As I said, I discussed this with some people I knew, and their opinion was THX-1138 would make a better joke, though their reasoning was "American Graffiti is a really bad movie when you get down to it."

Howard the Duck might have been a better choice.

Thing is, since Howard the Duck was in the end credits of Guardians of the Galaxy, it seems very possible Disney might actually have plans there.

You must have seen it on a re-release or in a dollar house. When it first played in theaters, neither Happy Days nor Laverne and Shirley had been on television.

Yep.
But, isn't that exactly how Laverne and Shirley were introduced? Fonzie and Richie had a double date with them?

In order of release/debut: AG (1973) < HD (1974) < L&S (1976). The characters of Laverne and Shirley appeared in the third season of Happy Days.

There's absolutely no way anyone could watch AG in the theater first run and wonder why Richie and Shirley were dating. That's what we're saying.
