Discussion of Marvel Comics events since Civil War

I had not bought comics in years but the Dark Reign storyline drew those dollars out of my pocket.

Just like I really really liked Kyle Rayner's Green Lantern and never really understood why people were so pissy about "bring Hal back!"

This is OT, but in a nutshell, it's that Hal was written LIGHT YEARS OUT OF CHARACTER in order to write him out of the book & let a new character take over as Green Lantern. And it took them a decade to recover from that one horribly-written story.

I know some comics fans are really hidebound by having the characters basically remain the same forever.

It's not so much that as believing that these characters should remain reasonably close to their "classic" incarnations to entertain the subsequent generations as much as they did the previous ones.

Why do we need "loser" Parker again?

In my mind, Peter Parker having hardships & still persevering is the essential component to his character. If it's just about him whining, though, then, yeah, he's a loser.

The very concept and reason for One More Day, Brand New Day, One Moment in Time is what I'm pissed off about it. I argue that the majority of the stories that were told in BND there is no reason that Peter and Mary Jane could have still been married. All they have done is added in dating hijinks which make Peter look like an ass hole two timing punk rather than a naive slob who has problems with women. Aside from those stories I see no reason why they needed to have their marriage forced apart. Joe Q has stated on multiple occasions that his memories of Spider-Man come from the 70's comics and has pushed the doctrine of "that parker luck" onto us. Well you know what Joe? As much as I too grow up on those comics thanks to back issues and trades that period of Peter's life is not what the majority of fans have grown up with now. They've grown up with the marriage, not only did they break them apart, they have now erased their entire time together from the marriage onwards. This distorts and greatly alters continuity. Marvel has included Clone Saga stuff in Brand New Day...well guess what fucktards...Peter and MJ suffered through that together as a married couple. All of that didn't happen. So where the fuck was Peter during that? Who did he have to turn to while he was going through all the "I am the Spider" crap that he went through after the revelation that his parents were psychotic robots??? Or the recent statement from comic con that May Parker (their baby that was given to Norman by the corrupt nurse)could return if sales were good? How the fuck is that possible when MJ and Peter would have needed to be married to have that happen??? Yes I'm ranting at the ridiculousness of the concept. I've enjoyed the majority of the stories from Brand New Day but I have been utterly against the notion and concept of the story from the start. That being said I am a little intrigued and excited at the 'Big Time' concept that will start in October after the 'Origin of Species' arc concludes.

I'm enjoying the Brubaker stuff on Captain America, and the Marvel Cosmic events which began with Annihilation Wave.

I don't like Incredible Hercules at all. The character of Amadeus Cho is not "fun" he is annoying as hell, and I wanted him to get caught by Shield while I was reading his Civil War stories.

The Marvel cosmic stuff has been pretty good since Civil War (actually, the kick-off event "Annihilation" ran concurrent to Civil War). The best part of it was a reboot of The Man Called Nova in which they worked out this Knight Rider style dynamic between Rich Ryder and his K.I.T.T.-like armor / power engine.

The current event, "Thanos Imperative", is focused on some alternate reality stuff; I've enjoyed what I've read so far.

I am not a Marvel fan, but the cosmic stuff is pure awesome. Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy are (hopefully not "were") two of my favorite comics. The events they've been tied into have also been great.

So does anyone actually believe that the Secret Invasion storyline was being planned by the writers as far back as "Avengers Disassembled"? I have a feeling that was a retcon.

At the time, I thought Jordan wasn't written out of character so much as they took one aspect of his character and ran with it: his being the most wound-up of the major DC heroes. In retrospect, it looks more forced.

Apparently Secret Invasion was the climax of Bendis's five year plan for the franchise of books...he's given several interviews backing this up so take it with a grain of salt. I believe him for some reason. He seems like a plotter to me.

I recall reading an interview--at the back of a book, I believe--where the writer said that when a cabal of shadowy figures within S.H.I.E.L.D. were shown plotting against the newly-formed New Avengers (i.e. between Disassembled and Civil War), they didn't know at the time who those shadowy figures would be. It was only later that this plotline became part of the Skrull invasion.

Still, I wouldn't call that bit a retcon. More of a plot seed. Seems to me they do that a fair amount--create these set-ups and scenarios for future writers to pick up on--and then editorial decide which ones to pursue, incorporate, or simply leave to fizzle.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
