Discovery's cast and production team, my thoughts...

In connection with another thread where we were briefly talking about how DSC's production team and cast get what Star Trek is and know its' history, I wanted to bring up something separately that came to mind after tweeting something to some of DSC's people today:

These a genuinely nice, gracious, down to earth people. People that you could sit with at dinner and talk for hours about Trek or the world in general.

I mean, I'm conversing via Twitter with people that will are making Star Trek!!!! On almost a weekly or a couple times a week basis! For example, I saw the Broadway version of RENT, my daughter saw the movie. When I showed my daughter that Anthony Rapp was not only liking tweets of mine, he was answering me, it sank in that she loves him, I loved him in the Broadway show, he's going to be in Star Trek, and here he is, talking with me!!!!

When Doug Jones was announced, I tweeted congratulations to him, told him to not let them give him a red shirt, and he replied both with laughter and a thank you! Beyond that, he's replied to me as well!

Ted Sullivan from the production team has not only replied to me, we've exchanged whole scenes of dialog from Trek, between me, him and his brother, including writing out the musical cues that would have been in the scene!

There are more examples, but I just wanted to bring up that this is a great group of people, both in what they do and how they speak with the fans. It's not a condescending or obligatory way they go about it, but it's genuine.

It will be surreal to see them on screen in DSC, knowing that we've spoken to each other!

Yes I feel like we are in good hands. Can hardly wait for September!

Mostly very pleased with the choices. The only thing that concerns me slightly is the lead - I didn't think SMG shone particularly on The Walking Dead. Not bad exactly, just didn't scream show lead to me. I'm happy to give her a clean slate here though as TWD's writing is not stellar and there's only so much an actor can save bad material.
Beyond that, very optimistic. Jason Issacs was a big win in my opinion, and Chris Obi. Plus the cast are really putting across an air of enthusiasm.

I don't watch TWD so I've no real hesistation in the lead. But there have been a lot of good choices I'd never heard of before. Matt Smith in Doctor Who being cast for Doctor Who was one. Never heard of him, and he quickly became a favourite.

I've seen people rant about how it's all Star Wars fanboys and these guys don't 'get it' - but thats lunacy. Following the writer on twitter makes me want to jump on a plane and join the party. The cast nad crew seem to know their stuff - or in some cases researching their stuff - and living the geeky dream.

It's infectious enthusiasm

I can see those concerns, but to be honest I completely gave up on TWD after they left Glen in the dumpster for 2 weeks. The only other thing I have seen her in was New Girl and she was great in that, so I am crossing my fingers.

From what I understand, everyone was so impressed with Sonequa at her audition, they literally wrote the part for her. I've never seen her act before on tv, and I've seen 12 seconds of her acting in the trailer, so I'm not worried. It'll just be new to me.

Yeah Sonequa in TWD gets a thankless, angst-driven, one-dimensional role that doesn't stand out from any of the other cast members at all. Certainly her performance is nothing to get excited about in that show. However, I find it hard to judge. The role is written as possibly the most cliche Walking Dead character, just an amalgamation of all the Walking Dead usual traits. But I never found her unbelievable or cheesy or anything, so although she was unable to bring anything fresh or intriguing to that role, I'm sure she is capable and I like what I'm hearing about her audition so...fingers crossed! Plus I am just in love with her whole look.

Sonuiqa was the same in Once Upon a Time and The Good Wife, so the problem isn't the character it's the actress.

That said they might have written the character to be flat and one dimensional so who knows.

Just wanted to add this wonderful cast photo from the EW shoot:

Wait. Michelle Yeoh isn't in the photo. Dissent among the cast? Her character dies in the first episode? She's camera shy? What can it possibly mean?:scream:
