Discovery to get tie-ins!

So, the Star Trek: Discovery panel at Mission New York is ongoing - with our own Kirsten (MF) Beyer on stage. And one of the things that has just been announced is that a novel will be coming from Simon & Schuster, and a comic series from IDW! They will be released "as the show airs".

EDIT: Further details! David Mack will be writing, and Mike Johnson doing the IDW run!

Have to read the TrekMovie feed quite closely. Kept mixing up Meyer and Beyer and spent a moment wondering when Beyer decided to kill Spock.

Excellent news about the tie-ins. Queue the inevitable, are these books canon debate... ;)

Are these books canon?

Well they are to this production team. In the same way Mosaic and Pathways were canon to Jeri Taylor. But once someone else takes over, just like what happened on Voyager, then they can and probably will be ignored.

But this is still super awesome, and it seems that having Kirsten involved has already reaped some great benefits.

You know, one of my favorite bits of fun out of all the lead-up to Discovery has been slowly learning what David Mack has been vaguebooking about with each new bit of information released. :p

So if the release of these novels is to coincide with the release of the season, does that mean that in January there will in fact be two Star Trek novels released? This Discovery tie-in and Dayton Ward's Headlong Flight which was already announced to be released the end of January.

We can't even assume that. It sounds more like the same kind of deal the IDW comics had with Roberto Orci and Bad Robot -- every effort is made to keep the tie-ins authentic, but that's more about being an accurate representation of canon and "being on the same page" than it is about actually being part of the canon. We don't know yet if it's actually a Lucasfilm Story Group sort of thing where the tie-ins are supposedly binding on the screen works as well as vice-versa.

It could be February and still be at the same time the show is airing. Is there already a February book announced too?

With 13 episodes in the season, it could be January, February, or March, maybe even April, since we don't know when in January the show will premiere.

Yes, DRG3's The Long Mirage.

I'm going to assume it won't be released in March or April. Kirsten Beyer has her new Voyager novel out in March, David Mack's new Section 31 novel released in April.

Your avatar is an accurate expression of me right now!

This is really great news. I'm very glad the TV folks are interested in novels instead of blocking them like the movie people.
