Discovery ship design has changed considerably

Nothing's wrong with the basic design, not a thing. It's better in many respects than most all of the post-TNG hero ships on TV.

Anyway, someone's put together a relatively simple model and animation that gives a sense of how this kind of shape looks from various angles and perspectives. It's really quite striking and cool.

Really much sleeker and fast-looking than we're used to.

Probably the best looking ship since the Enterprise-D in 1987.

I like that doesn't slot in to the "design evolution" fans are always on about... which just made all of the ships look alike after a while.

Like Star Trek 2009, the new team seems to be ignoring everything that happened after 1979.

Which is not a bad thing, at this point. TNG and some of the later shows were fine, but just as Paramount realized in 2007 it's time to go back to the beginning, the roots from which this whole thang sprang.

ST '09 referenced a number of things post-'79. Spock Prime was identified as "Ambassador," and his involvement with the Romulans seemed to be a continuation of his arc in TNG: "Unification" -- plus the implied good UFP-Romulan relations reflect the status quo at the end of Nemesis. The movie also featured the Kobayashi Maru simulation and referenced Regula I, mentioned a katric ark (a term from the Enterprise season-4 Vulcan trilogy, although they used it differently) and "Admiral Archer's prize beagle," as well as the terms "transwarp beaming" and "away team" and the Cardassian Sunrises Uhura ordered in the bar.

True, the only difference being the 2009 team also ignored everything that happened before 1979... ;)

Well, the JJ-Prise's saucer looks like it CAME from 1979, which is the only part of it that looks half-way authentic (save for the novelty of the "window" viewscreen).

This is in reference to ship design, not canon per se.

My post was clearly discussing ship design.

I like the overall idea, but I wish the "wings" were narrower and the nacelles were a little closer together.

Good news, but we kinda expected this. I think the ship will look 10 times better next time we see it.
From the preview video I thought it kind of looked more like a Klingon cruiser than a Federation ship. I hope the new design is closer to Enterprise like

I hate how the video is called is "Star Trek TV Reboot", it's not a reboot but a new series!

Shame to hear the Discovery design is changing though, I really liked it how it was.

Here's still hoping that the design is going to make a difference. That is, the ship is shaped unlike the TOS-onwards hero ships for a reason, just like the Defiant looked unconventional for a reason.

The thing is.... I don't actually think it is that unconventional.

Maybe it has a big secondary hull to carry more shuttles, but beyond that....

It isn't "unlike" later ships: it's got a saucer, a neck, a second section with a hanger at the back, and two warp pods on the end of pylons. If the engineering section was a little rounder this discussion wouldn't really be happening. It's really nothing too unconventional in a Starfleet that encompasses the Daedalus to the Enterprise-D, the Defiant and the Pasteur, the Norway and the Prometheus.

And the same aergument goes for them all: I'd like for there to be a reason why the Norway looks so exceptional, why the Pasteur does, and so forth.

We did get what amounts to an explanation with the Defiant and the Prometheus, and the design really was a plot point. The shape of the Pasteur went hand in hand with her being a hospital ship. This was all great fun. But a shape that is not a plot point is just dull. And the design of the Discovery contrasts with all the (UFP) Enterprises being virtually indistinguishable at a distance; hopefully, the role of the ship also provides a contrast of some sort. Else what's the point of the entire show?

I think that looks just awesome! I'm really warming to the design.
