I just had this pop into my head in another thread. Copying here because it's more appropriate.

Species 10C needs to mine to survive and it'll be revealed that they're so different from our type of species that they are unaware of the damage the DMA is causing. Consequently, it's too dangerous for their automated machine to continue but yet they need the resources to survive.

Zora will be the compromise. She can carry out the mining mission (while collecting whatever data she wants) and at the same time ensure the DMA doesn't harm any other species.

However it ends, Michelle Paradise has confirmed that it has an air of seasonal finality to it like last year's - no cliffhanger is involved.

Truce with Species 10C still feels probable. The season as a whole is about seemingly impossible divides and the will to maintain them. It's about whether grief is relative or grief is grief. It feels like the answers to the questions being presented will ultimately hew toward the positive, as befits the show and its overarching franchise.

I'm gonna guess the mining machine has gone rogue and 10C don't actually mean to cause mass destruction. They're probably trying to stop it themselves from within their bubble but without success.

Could you tell me where I can verify this claim? I've been following her lines about the season and I don't remember seeing anything like it, I might as well have missed it

Yeah, I was thinking that there is no way there are no records of that race in their records. The D had records of races and empires that existed many millennia before Humanity first walked on the moon. The identity of that race may be buried somewhere in their database, not getting any attention from the citizens of the Federation or Starfleet.

It will end with Discovery heading to the other galaxy to seek out species 10c.

the only question is will it be a true First Contact mission or will it be to seek peace/a truce after Book succeeds and the blowback is epic resulting in something like the distraction of Starfleet HQ.

Species 10c will turn out to be Michael’s father. Then they’ll travel 900 years further in the future to save the galaxy.

They make contact with species 10C and the DMA was an automated mining craft that due to species 10C being a different form of life wasn't set to avoid planets with carbon based life. They make peace and Book gets redemption by not destroying the DMA which the 10C needed to save their species from extinction which results in them joining the Federation.

Certainly! I took it from here. Specifically:

Granted, that is somewhat less close-and-shut evidence as my brain seemed to remember it was. But yeah, I'm pretty sure this is what led me to the direct belief that the season ends similarly to the third, not the second, in terms cod how much of a narrative ribbon and bow is tidily supplied.

I don't know if I believe the idea that she and Kurtzman wouldn't have a season 5 planned. I see how, we won't do a finale like Lower Decks Season 2, but we can create something like Entreprise's appearance in DIS Season 1.

I'll wait and see what they come up with for the season 4 finale, but I don't deny that I'd like a really big loose end. Something like the 10C species is dead and they have to figure out how to end the DMA, but that destroys the hyperfield exposing the rest of civilization and that draws the attention of an enemy race of the extinct 10C.

Oh, I'm sure they have all sorts of ideas for the fifth season. Well, at this point they're probably well into writing it, and they have ideas for a potential sixth buzzing around as well. I just meant that I take Paradise's quote in that interview as evidence that we get more of a "let's fly" final scene without overt loose ends involved. Doesn't mean there can't be plenty left dangling in general.

It also does not mean they won't add a teaser filmed separately now that they know S5 is a go. It could be a Let's Fly.... cut to some WTF scene that will drive fans crazy that they have to wait 18 months to see what it actually means.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know how the end of S1 was done? Was the Enterprise always planned, or did that come about later?

I think it's a remnant of the Borg creating Omega molecules.

originally they were strict they won’t be showing the enterprise or Spock, eventually they changed their minds, showing the enterprise in the finale was a relatively late decision.

I know it would be in Trek tradition for this to all be some unfortunate misunderstanding or accident - as was the case last season. Not a stretch to imagine some options: exotic dark matter beings who didn't recognise us as lifeforms, or perhaps a long dead race whose super-tech is running on autopilot.

But sometimes, bad things happen that aren't a misunderstanding. Sometimes, there really are very powerful, very shitty people out there that just want to drink your milkshake; whether you live or die is incidental.

I'd be far more interested in species 10-C if they are revealed to be every bit as powerful as our protagonists suspect, but are utterly indifferent to the lives they've mowed down in their mining operations. And, in spite of Burnham's best efforts to appeal to them, are unmoved.

Then what? Obviously a story that would need more than one season to resolve at this point.

I totally get you. I'd be down for that as well. It's incredibly important for Star Trek to maintain the idea that many conflicts are sparked through misunderstandings, and that kindness and such can solve the crisis. But even Star Trek is ripe for a few examples of, "no, not so much, fire everything."

Species 10-C using Particle 010 would be apt

I was wondering what 10-C is based on... tenth unknown species, threat level C? XD

I will be OK with any kind of ending they do for the season as long as it’s not a space nazis cliffhanger.
