Then I think we are at agree to disagree point. The number of lines means little to me.I care about them in that they're people and I don't want to see them hurt, but I am obviously far more invested in characters that...are characters.
Tomlinson was a guest star in one episode, not some one who was supposed to be a cast member...and he still probably got more lines of dialogue than half the bridge crew in the entirety of season 1.
ETA: Well, since no one else posted I will add some more.
I did some quick research and discovered something interesting: Tomlinson had no lines of dialog in the episode. Yet his death is still the coda of the episode. No lines, yet he still stands out in my mind as a person worth sympathizing with.
Rhys stands out to me even in small interactions with Lorca. It doesn't take lines to impress upon me these characters. Call it reading too much in to it, call it overthinking, or whatever, but I find them engaging.
