Discovery in Variety

That Discovery Bridge is closer than I was expecting tbh.

I took the images that were posted earlier. Smooshed them together (that's a technical term lol) and then added a little bit of colour grading to the original Pike Bridge, and the lighting choices match (sorta)

Going by the ship name and tone of the show, I like to think the ship class name is of a pioneer or explorer. So, until further notice, I'm going to assume they used the Kiwi most famous for climbing Everest.

Because Trump's reaction would be funny.

The "SS" in "Class" does seem to match the letters that would be "SS" in "Crossfield" if your friend was right:

That's how I was reading it, too! Thank you for placing the letters! I don't have the Machine Extended font on my new PC here at work to try for the shapes, since it looks like that font.

FINALLY, a good look at the Disco bridge! It looks fantastic. My notes:

- There are three alcoves at the back. The one at starboard side of the set looks to be a corridor entrance and not a turbolift. It's covered in what looks like computer hard drive greeblies, which SMG is standing in front of in another picture on this thread.

- The center and portside doors don't look to be the same width. My guess is one is a lift and the other leads to a ready room or conference room.

- The distinguishing feature has to be the helm/nav stations. They're split, unlike that of the Shenzhou and the Enterprise of this era. More importantly, they're very nicely sculpted to be part of the "pit" that they're in, and are not true free-standing consoles. Love that!

- There ARE actual free-standing consoles flanking the CO chair, which are a carryover from the Shenzhou and analogous to those found on several other Starfleet ships (E-E, the E-D battle bridges, Saratoga, the Nebula class Prometheus, etc.). The Discovery's consoles seem wide enough for two people, at least one of whom is sitting behind a transparent glass display (which Michelle Yeoh is pictured behind). The other station looks to feature a large embedded monitor from the early 21st century for some reason. :P

- But while we don't see the front of the bridge here, it does look to suffer from the "empty space" syndrome of certain Trek bridges, notably the Enteprise-E where a full third of the front of the ship is devoid of anything between the con/ops stations and the main viewer. The practical reason for this is to allow more space for the TV cameras, which in turn allow for more dynamic shots; but it's perpetually annoying that an advanced and efficient spaceship would have a small appartment's worth of real estate and NOTHING in it, for no real reason.

- As on the Shenzhou (and the Defiant for that matter), the CO chair is on its own raised platform. However, here it's only one step up from the main deck, versus two for the Shenzhou. I'm guessing it's because of the differences in the relative statures of the two ships' commanding officers dictated a production reason for the Shenzhou's chair to be higher for everyone.

- The Discovery's "final" look is displayed proudly on the MSDs on the rear portside stations! Little way around the long nacelle look now. Looks like they are moving displays too, or at least they offer 3/4 displays of the ship, which is a first for displays of this kind.

- Yay, the dedication plaque! It's a piece of Trek continuity of course.. And is it ENOUGH for the haters? :D

You can see in this pic that the Shenzhou consoles are split too -

Other shots suggest the astogator is between them, so not true split consoles I guess, but still more split than anything in TOS and the movies until the Excelsior(s)

Yes, sorry - I meant to say they're not split in that you can't walk through them as you would most famously on the E-D and now here. Furthermore, the split here is arguably the most pronounced as on any other starship with a similar layout... The helmsman would have a noticable off-center viewpoint with respect to the ship centerline. Not a real dealbreaker, but for whatever he'd ever NEED to look out the window for, he's got a relatively poor vantage point compared to other helm stations we've seen.

The size is fine, but the lack of a railing and the separated helm and nav consoles make it feel a bit emptier than we're used to.

So now we know Discovery is one of the top 3-4 most expensive shows in history for sure. It's also already in profit. This must be one of the biggest early success stories in TV history because usually at this point, studios are biting their nails at the outcome with such an outlay of money. Not so in this case. It's all about the name.

Genuinely looks like a ship from one generation later.

"Hopefully" "if" and "three or four years" is not the language of assured success.

*Hell I'll even give it 1 in 5 odds that it ends up being one of the biggest financial blunders in TV history.
