Maybe in terms of spectacle, but the show has dropped his focus on character from earlier on.

1. Are you liking Discovery thus far?
As is the case with most series, the pilot episode (the 2-parter) was "meh" because pilot episodes by definition need to take too much time to introduce characters and include too much exposition; there is no time to let the characters shine -- plus we don't even know what to look for in a character to experience that "shine"...
...Having said that, episode three was very good. In fact, I went back to watch the pilot again, and it seemed better than when I watched it on the premiere night (probably because I understood the characters' personality traits better).

I think the quality still has a ways to go (To be on par with the shows it's trying to compete with.), but I'm still getting enjoyment out of it - or rather I'm finding the whole "experience" (watching, discussing, etc.) enjoyable.

1. Yes, but painfully. There are a lot if things bothering me, and whilst I imagine mist will become clearer, there are a few that I suspect will be ignored.
2. Another DS9 lover here.
3. As a mixed race individual who grew up in an almost entirely white area in the 80s, I really identified with Spock as the odd one out. He was my childhood hero.
4. This is hardest. Futurama, Star Trek (lumped together) and Red Dwarf are probably the top 3.
Narrowing everything I like the fit the next spots is too hard. The Big Bang Theory and the Simpsons are contenders, but NuBSG, Buffy, Doctor Who and many others are contenders too.

Yes. The characters aren't outside the bounds of what we've seen in Trek before, especially when you take into account the admirals gone wrong. It's early to tell, but there certainly seems to be allegory at play, and I have faith that it'll maintain the Trek philosophy, much like the Xindi arc took a while to get into that territory.

I never could get into it, though my wife loves it. She is smarter than me.
I don't like fantasy, so I never gave it a try. About a month ago I binge watched the whole show. It's pretty good 6.5/10
