Discovery at SDCC - Consolidated Thread

Did I claim that's not the case?
Nice strawman there. My point was just you can make nice holodeck episodes so there's no need to ban it from ever appearing on TV again.
I was making a point that comedy can occur with or without, no strawman intended. More of a clarification on a point that, perhaps seemed obvious, but I felt needed stating.

I thought the holodeck was overused and would rather it not appear on TV again.

I think the problem with the holodeck, is the writers use it as a crutch if it exists.

I agree in so far as it was an easy way for writers to just make a really quirky episode with unusual things. Easier than it would have been to include quirky stuff in a regular episode. I do think the holodeck added some actual nice content to TNG, though.

I am forever against the holodeck after those Irish village episodes Voyager did.

It also gave us Dwight Schultz. :ack:

That was something I didn't quite grasp. They were light years from home, limited food and energy supplies, but they had a hell of a time using the holodeck! That would have been the first thing I'd shut down!

Like I was saying, there was the occasional holodeck episode that was nice. Fistfull of Datas is a great example. However, I agree with the notion that they were an overused crutch. You've got the entire universe, high tech, aliens, phenomenon, etc to play with. Those should be able to add plenty of quirkiness and humor as needed.

Apart from the holodeck, if the Discovery gets taken over by aliens who are in the bodies of the crew and end up controlling the ship from the bar, I'm out.

There's a difference between saying they used too often (I agree with that) and they should never use it again. ;)

"The Big Goodbye" was so well-received that writers gravitated toward the Holodeck too much.

Consider that you're pitching stories for a fantasy adventure show and are constantly being directed by producers that there are no villains, that there should be little or no conflict between the principal characters. Everyone in the room knows more about the "24th century" than you do, and you can't do this or that etc. etc....

And then a co-writer comes up with a story about gun play, hostages, gangsters and deadly peril to the main characters and Roddenberry loves it.

Well, then... ;)

They said in an episode that the holodecks ran on their own separate power source or some dumb excuse like that.
Now you're jogging my memory about it. They did say that, and all I was thinking was why not reroute that power to...I don't know...the rest of the ship?!?!?!?!
