Spoilers Discovery and the Novelverse - TV show discussion thread

Honestly, even if everyone's fears are realized and this does indeed result in novel continuity being discarded, everyone's just going to have to deal with it. We all knew this was a possibility. And while it is impressive that so far we're nine years into a movie revival and coming into the second year of a television revival without it affecting the Novel Continuity to any serious degree, the simple fact is it's eventual overriding may be coming more and more inevitable. It's unfortunate, but a reality of how this business works.

And opposed to the old EU the trek novels were never canon or marked as such-so they would be overridden with even less fanfare.

Personally to me Destiny will always be apart of my head canon and I am sad I likely won't be getting that Hobus Trilogy I've talked about(unless they can write such a thing within a year).

Honestly, I suspect the most we can expect are some minor stuff from the novels seeping into the show. Like Andorian naming conventions, for example. I very much doubt we're going to get a situation of material being turned down for the show because it contradicts a novel, or even the novel continuity. That's just not going to happen at all.

the name of the capital city of Andorian from the novels made it onto a prop in Episode 1 of DSC.

Mind you can't read it in any scene.

I guess my question is: is Beyer willing to overwrite the story tapestry she contributed to?

Star Trek Online will likely keep going, but its continuity will be screwed as the new material will likely have to conform to the TV series.
Nah they'll probably just treat STO as an alternate timeline.

The producers probably don't want fans to have to go read a dozen novels to make sense of the Post-Nemisis world.

I really doubt it. Though I find it funny you are now on the alternate timeline train! If you have something you don't want messed with, all of a sudden an alternate timeline is something you're willing to consider. :p

STO isn't canon so I don't care.
I also don't care if they ignore the novels.

It would seem odd to me, if the goal is to overwrite the novel continuity, to have a new show premiere a few months after a new TNG novel that continues the story threads that have been long running.

Honestly, it's something she should have been prepared to do the moment she got the ball rolling on this show. I think it's a safe guarantee that a 24th century revival on TV with Picard in it is going to incorporate the Borg. And there's no way in hell the show is going to be beholden to whatever happened in Destiny. Likewise, any decision regarding Picard's post-Nemesis life is not going to made in consultation to what happened in the novels. These are facts fans are going to have to accept.

To be fair, STO alters the timeline something like every other month, so this won't actually impact them that much.

But they are more advertising for a new show. So I don't doubt that the Picard show won't be featured.

True, but we're not under any obligation to keep supporting the novels if that happens, either.

I'm not going to be devastated if they overwrite the last ten years of novels, honestly. At the same time, if the Picard show is 20 years post-Nemesis, it could be done in such a way to not overtly overwrite the novel continuity.

Though bringing the Borg in would be quite the trick.
