Spoilers Discovery and the Novelverse - TV show discussion thread

This might be interesting... Will The Enerprise War be the final DSC novel taking place in 23rd century?

EDIT: Then again, nature of the show has always been a problem for novels taking the place at the same time as the actual series. I am curious what exactly will happen here. Maybe next wave of books will be backstory of the new setting.

I doubt it will be the last Disco novel set in the 23rd century. For all we know, there could easily be another novel released before the new season starts which could easily be tied into the first two seasons. If there is, I grant you the next one after that will likely be fleshing out the future times in which Disco arrives in, but I wouldn't rule out another 23rd century novel at some point down the road.

I could see a Spock/Michael novel fleshing out their early years together, and their relationship with Sarek and Amanda.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we got an episode of the week type novel set before season 2 (captain Saru) or early days of Pike. The characters are established enough now.

I don't think there's room for that. I tried to figure out whether the "Runaway" short could fit sometime in the last act of the season 1 finale, and I just didn't see room for it. There's room for a gap between the end of the war and the big ceremony and speech, but it seems to go pretty straight from the ceremony to escorting Sarek back to Vulcan to getting the distress call from Pike.

There are still plenty of opportunities for 23rd Century prequel books.
I wouldn't be against books or even a single book that fleshed out some of the supporting characters like Detmer, Owosekun, Ariam, Bryce and Rhys.

According to the Captain Saru comic, Discovery spent some time in dry dock at Earth, giving Tilly time to ship out with the Dorothy. It implies between passing Neptune and nearing Vulcan, some time passed.

But there is also pattern of books being closely related to the charecter stuff of topical seasons.

Exactly why prequels remain likely. The characters are from the 23rd century. They're new to the future setting and have no ties there. So any book that focuses on their backstories or relationships beyond the ship needs to take place there.

Yeah, until we actually see the new present for Discovery, meeting new characters and getting an idea of the new setting, seeing a novel set in the new “present” doesn’t seem likely, since introducing that seems like what Season Three will be about. Once we learn more about the new era, there will probably be some novels about it, but until then, I figure that - unless commissioned directly by the producers to set the stage, a task they’d probably sooner use Short Treks for - they’ll stick to 23rd century stories for the novels.

There are still a handful of possibilities for what the novels can do in the 23rd century, too - not to risk dipping into story ideas, but plenty of characters could still see a prequel of their own or share with others. There’s room for a few novels before we get to next season.

OK, I get it... However, I expect on of these book might be very season-specific, like the previous about Lorca and now about Pike.

But we've never yet had a book about season-specific content before it was introduced on the show. The first novel came out the same week as the premiere and focused entirely on the Shenzhou, which we'd just seen on TV. We didn't see the first novel about Lorca until season 1 had ended, and the Pike novel is still 2 months away.

OK... In any case, I am curious about the new course in both media.

Most likely at some point after the new season premieres there will be a novel set in the future time period, but likely before Disco arrives focusing on new characters native to the new time period who will either be in the show's main or supporting cast.

Will the new global Trek franchise group impact the novels at all? The article doesn't mention novels.

Don't know about that one way or the other, but I really think that the "novel-verse" is going to be over pretty soon anyways, same reason that Star Wars Legends went away; with a new slate of TV shows and huge plans for expansion, a lot of that stuff is going to get overwritten and gaps where it used to play filled up.

I'm assuming the references to "consumer products" includes the books and comics.
