A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

TrekMovie reports that the airing of Star Trek: Discovery on Space in Canada at 8 PM has caused a complaint to be...

Not really seeing an issue here. Space is aware of Canadian broadcast standards. Seriously, is the Trek fan base so old at this point that it is a struggle to stay up until 10pm? Or to set the DVR to record and watch it the next day?

There's more competition in the 9 PM timeslot.

They've been airing The Expanse at 9 PM on first broadcast with language intact, and re-airing it a few nights later with the swears silenced. I choose that word to describe exactly what they did.

Upon further reflection, I think I might want to send a counter-complaint to the CRTC about this.

But they had viewer discretion warnings at the beginning and after every single commercial break, so viewers should have been aware.

I usually ended up watching the 11:00 pm repeat showing anyway, because 8:00 didn't really work into my schedule that well. Hopefully if the 8:00 showing gets edited, the later one is still intact. Assuming they don't just bump it all to 9:00 and 12:00 next season.

Odd, I could've sworn they'd silenced the swear words for the 8pm broadcasts. Maybe that's just in the commercial they were running that included Tilly's f-bomb.

One would think that in this day and age, the viewer discretion warning would be sufficient, but I'm not up on CRTC regulations. But I certainly don't think there's a significantly greater amount of violence in Discovery than, say, your average cop show. (I wonder if any of the people I know who work at Space would be free to comment on this. I'll have to ask them if I get the opportunity.)

There are 6 time zones in Canada, and depending on where you live, you might really be in the position of having to stay up late to watch it.

Space runs disclaimers on any show that contains profanity or adult situations. That should be sufficient.

And considering some of the graphic images that CBC.ca puts on its website that show up without warning in my newsfeed, that's who the complainant should be going after. Thanks to the "new look" the photos are HUGE.

Honestly? The gore is fucking unbearable. The writers don't tread any of the topics - violence, torture, mutilation with ANY of the gravitas it deserves - they only use it for shock value. Even when some random extras die in the background, we get a close-up of blood splattering and their intestines being shoved all over the screen in extreme close-ups.

It's fucking disgusting. I have no problem with swearing. But jezuz. BattlestarGalactica was a much more mature show. When they showed graphic violence, it was appropriate. Because BSG wasn't such a fluffy show in the first place. It was maturely handling about adult themes like politics, violence, addiction, human rights and studying broken characters. It worked.

DIS is a fucking childrens' show with Saturday morning Cartoon logic (this ship threatens the entire multiverse! We have to blow it up!). A childrens' show that tries to be "edgy" by shoving an insane amount of fucking gore in everyone's faces. But it's still so shallow and superficial, there is absolutely NO SUBTEXT AT ALL. Just all the gore because "so edgy".

I fucking hate that. They should turn that shit waaay down going forward, and only use it when appropriate. Not every. single. fucking. episode.

@T'Bonz, looks like a typo, underlined:

And if they persist in showing Discovery at 9 PM, they will have to bleep out profanity or cut violent scenes. So it’s quite possible that Star Trek: Discovery will move to 9 PM to avoid this.

I believe that should be 8.
