Discovered something disturbing about "secondary market" in my area...

Re: Discovered something disturbing about "secondary market" in my are

Mary's is still over on Maple, the north side, up by that pharmacy just west of 72nd Street. Or at least she was a few months back.
I drove by there this weekend, and the sign has been replaced by one for an auto parts store.

Do you remember Star Realm in La Vista? Or was that before your time?
I do. I won't stop in to that Quiznos which has replaced it. One of the agreements they made when they bought the building was to leave the mural on the outside alone. As soon as they took ownership, they painted over it.

For those wondering, it was a science fiction bookstore. The outside of the building, on three sides, was a giant space scene with Romulan and Klingon ships, faces, wormholes and other awesome paintings. Now, it's plain old tan.

If you get down to Lincoln, there are a few decent ones down there, and I go to Kansas City a few times a year and always drop a hundred in the Half-Price Books down in Olathe.
Ok, when are we going to KC? Let me know so I can save up.

Re: Discovered something disturbing about "secondary market" in my are

^ It wasn't just a science-fiction bookstore, it was THE sci-fi bookstore! His selection of sci-fi, Trek and Star Wars (what little there was at that time) and post-nuclear war action-adventure fiction was beyond compare. Not to mention models, blueprints, posters, you name it and he had it or could get it. I'm still kicking myself for not buying that three-foot-long BSG model kit while it was available. I think he's still around as Standing Bear Trading Post on 13th Street, down by the Sokol Underground, but it's been ages since I was there. He no longer had paperbacks, but did have posters, some models, some trade paperback-sized books.

Next time I go will be in December. I go early in the morning and spend time with my brother and his family, then either stay the night or come home late, depending upon the weather. And I'm on-call 24/7 with Union Pacific, so I never know for sure until the day before. Worst case scenario, I'll get with you when the time comes and you can give me a list of what you're looking for, if schedules don't permit the trip for you.

Too bad to lose Mary's. She's been around as long as I've been in Omaha (since '88). I wasn't sure if she had a sign; drove past the store twice looking for it two months back and finally called her for directions. Found the "Debt Of Honor" graphic novel from DC therein for $3, so it was worth the search.

ares93, I suggest The Book Depository, shipping is free worldwide. You might also find that ordering from amazon UK is cheaper than ordering from Amazon US, it's closer for one thing.

Re: Discovered something disturbing about "secondary market" in my are

My german is a bit rusty though, but it really seems cheaper.

I once got very brave and ordered the "ST TNG/DS9: Symbiose" graphic novel via Amazon.de and had big trouble with all the German instructions and buttons o the site. I called up a second browser window with regular Amazon on it and hey, presto, instant translations!

Re: Discovered something disturbing about "secondary market" in my are

I'm in the Chicago suburbs and there's several Half-price books. I've been picking up the Strange New Worlds books there (how did I miss these?! And what's with the condescending introduction? "These aren't stories by 'real' writers, just some stuff we allowed you amateur schmucks to bang out in an afternoon...

That's because SNW was a contest to publish stories by people who were not, in fact, published writers. Nothing condescending about it.

Re: Discovered something disturbing about "secondary market" in my are

I've noticed the dry up of ST books at my local used book stores, well, the ones that are left, and I have to say, I don't blame the stores for not buying and stocking them. There used to be some stores that had big selections of ST books and I noticed the stock never changed. It was always the same stock month after month and in one case, year after year. If something isn't moving they are not going to continue to give it shelf space.

I'm aware of what it was, but it still felt like an exclusive country club "allowing" folks from the wrong side of the tracks the privilege of mowing the lawn on the golf greeens.

I really think you're projecting rather than reading anything that's actually there, but everyone's entitled to an opinion, they say...
