Disco Music For Wedding Reception

I've been put in charge of compiling a list of songs to be played at a wedding reception. Basically i'm going to be DJ'ing and it will involve me playing the music :alienblush:. What have I let myself in for!!!!!

But what music is the ultimate question???? :( I don't have a clue.

What songs would you have played at a wedding reception? it's sort of a casual type of evening do with a buffet if you know what I mean. What would you class as disco music?

Please help me. :(

I don't know if the invitations have gone out or not yet, but if they haven't, I recently attended a wedding where guests were given the opportunity to request a song when they RSVP'd.

If you play disco music then we'll have to attend your funeral. So just don't do it.

I recommend Ice-T's love ballad "GIRLS L.G.B.N.A.F." for the Bride and Groom's first dance

Disco music of today isn't like it was in your day. ;)

Seriously, I think your idea of disco music isn't quite what i'm talking about.
Dance music, you mean.
We don't call modern music with a drum machine "Disco" anymore.

However, "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor is a big crowd favorite

"Let's Get it Started" by the Black Eyed Peas is another.
"Holla Back Girl" -Gwen Staffani
"YMCA"- The Village People
"It Takes Two" -Rob Bass
"Sexy Back"- Justin Timberlake
"Electric Slide" - Taste O Honey

I have forwarded this to Disco Jen. When she gets home she will bring forth her vast reserve of Disco Knowings And Stuff and torment you all in ways you have no idea JUST FUCKING RUN!

^Hehe. Nice.

In Western Canada (my home), I have seen a number of wedding dances begin with Anne Murray's Could I Have This Dance. It's almost a regional tradition.

First, the bride and groom dance alone, until at least the end of the first chorus. Then, everyone else joins in.

That may be too "country" for your purposes, though. Or too Canadian, for that matter.

There was a Malcolm in the Middle episode where they were at a wedding expo, and seemingly every booth was offering their own muzak version of "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang.

So either play that song because it's expected of you, or don't play it because it's been done to death at wedding receptions. :)

YMMV, but it is my firm belief that for a wedding to be really good, the music must get progressively cheesier as the night goes on. Cool music-savvy indie won't win half as much enthusiasm as The Locomotion and The Birdie Song.

Intersperse slower songs with songs that A)everyone can holler along to or B) songs that have dance routines (Macarena, The Time Warp).

Let their be no shame. At the height of the evening, everyone ought to be far too drunk to fake shame at belting out the words of Buttercup.

(Mind you, this could be a cultural thing. Maybe in your part of the world weddings are civilised affairs.)

Did I miss something? Why don't you ask the bride and groom what they want played? At least that way you'll have an idea of where to start looking for tunes.

What some people might consider fine for a wedding (like that chicken dance crap or YMCA) might be offensively bad to others.

There was a famous case of someone wanting to walk down the aisle to "the theme from Robin Hood" - by which they meant this  - but instead they walked down the aisle to this.

I attended a wedding recently in which the DJ was playing themes from Disney animated movies and Kenny G. :wtf: I recommend not doing that.
