DISC writers pick their favorite episodes

http://www.cbs.com/shows/star-trek-...rs-pick-their-favorite-classic-trek-episodes/

....of classic Trek!

A pretty good list of episodes I feel though I was never a fan of Darmok. If I had to pick one from each series..

TOS. City on the Edge Of Forever
TNG. Best Of Both Worlds
DS9 The Visitor
Voyager. Scorpion
Enterprise. In a mirror darkly

Good article!, Nice to see the variety of different influences on the writing team. My picks (caveat: I chose a movie for my TOS pick, due to not having seen enough TOS to have a favourite episode.)

TOS: The Undiscovered Country (probably my favourite trek film)
TNG: Darmok
DS9: In the pale moonlight
Voyager: Distant Origin
Enterprise: none of it stood out enough for me to have a favourite episode

A lot of the standard responses, but there's a few pleasant surprises thrown in. The only one that seems bizarre is Unification 1 & 2. Not a pair of episodes generally held in high regard, so far as I know. It's like reading that somebody's favorite episode is The Masterpiece Society or something.

This was just asking for trouble. "Of course Discovery is rubbish, they included X but didn't include Y."

Still, in their defence that list read like it was designed by PR goons to be as inoffensive as possible to the largest number of Trekkers.

My favorites:
TOS: amok time/ city on the edge
TNG: best of both worlds/ inner light
DS9: in the pale moonlight/ visitor
VOY: distant origin
ENT: mirror darkly

Mine would be:

TOS - Amok Time
TNG - Yesterday's Enterprise
DS9 - The Visitor
Voy - Blink of an Eye
Ent - Damage

I thought they had some well thought choices, for the most part.

TOS: City on the Edge
TNG: Inner Ligt
DS9: The Visitor
ENT: Strategem (I'd put the Forge arc first, but its 3 episodes and only works as an arc)

Given the themes they are exploring, I hope they would watch: The Ultimate Computer, Tapestry, In the Pale Moonlight, Equinox and United.

I don't get the love for Unification either. Take away the novelty of having Spock there and it's really an average episode. I actually enjoyed The Game because it touched on game addiction and had the clever twist of using gaming devices for brain washing.

How many writers are on the Discovery staff? This article mentions the following:
Akiva Goldsman
Gretchen J. Berg & Aaron Harberts (showrunners)
Ted Sullivan
Lisa Randolph
Jordon Nardino
Erika Lippoldt
Bo Yeon Kim
Kirsten Beyer
Sean Cochran

Based on the credits of aired episodes there are also:
Craig Sweeny
Jesse Alexander
Aron Eli Coleite
Kemp Powers

We also know Joe Menosky is on the staff. Not clear if Nick Meyer will do any writing or not. And of course there are the co-creaters: (the now departed) Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman.

I guess they can afford it with the $8 million budget, but maybe that is too many writers.

I was surprised about the lack of Enterprise given the references made to it thus far. I thought there’d be at least a token episode selection.

Loved the mention of “Civil Defense”. That’s a real underrated gem.

I thought someone would mention ITPM and Duet. If not, then at least the Season 6 arc on DS9, considering I hear so many writers are Niners (and it shows).

My choices FWIW (can't choose one on most of them!):

TOS: The Tholian Web/City on the Edge of Forever/Amok Time/The Journey to Babel/The Enterprise Incident/Mirror, Mirror/The Devil in the Dark

TNG: Yesterday's Enterprise/The Offspring/BOBW I/The Measure of a Man/I, Borg/Darmok

DS9: Duet/Civil Defense/Return to Grace/Little Green Men/The Visitor/Trials and Tribble-ations/In the Pale Moonlight/The Season 6 six-ep arc also including In the Cards and Call to Arms/The Magnificent Ferengi/Far Beyond the Stars

VOY: Year of Hell 1&2/Scorpion 1&2

ENT: Regeneration/Carbon Creek/Azati Prime & Damage/Twilight/Impulse/In a Mirror, Darkly, 1&2/The Forge, Awakening & Kirshara

A rather telling list considering some of the creative choices and the direction of the show. Those are definitely the Trek episodes which are inspiring Discovery.

Oh yes, that is a good list and I agree. I am unsure how anyone did not see the USS Pegasus playing a role here lol

Or The Devil in the Dark! Some of them are ones I hadn't perhaps thought of but can now see elements of, like The First Duty, Ensign Ro and Face of the Enemy.

Yep, its so easy to see the frame of mind once its laid out like that. I can not tell you how many Times I had to bring up Ro when people complained out "starfleet" treating someone as the crew does Micheal lol.
