I just saw an ad run on TV tonight about a NEW Stargate production. My thought on this matter is with all the seperation between us "fans", why doesn't CBS test the waters and see what part of TREK lore really garners that much attention? I mean sure let J.J. have his dream of making this in his own mind, but release a direct to DVD movie?

Which would be your choice?

I wouldn't mind a Direct-to-DVD series (maybe one or two 90-minute features a year) exploring an era of Trek we really haven't seen before, like the time period after Cochrane's first warp flight and before the formation of Starfleet in ENT...

I wouldn't be opposed to something set in the 24th-Century except that I think it's just that there are other eras to play around with too, including the TMP era in which we had the PJ uniforms...

well the advantage of Direct to DVD is that you can aim the story at fans without having to ask the question of whether it would appeal to Grandma in Idaho. You wouldn't have to do T&A or anything else, plus you have the advantage of not having to keep to an episode production schedule.

The downside is that other than the fans, no one knows about it, at least unless it gets a lot of good buzz.

I'd like to see that done, if only because I don't think you can do a deep scifi and have it be mainstream.

I'll be interested in seeing how this new SG-1 movie does. I have to admit, up until now I've always been pretty disdainful of direct-to-VHS/DVD releases, and with good reason; most of the time, they're the realm of crappy Disney sequels, crappy American Pie sequels, and the latest crap movies from washed-up old action stars like Steven Seagal.

I doubt Paramount/CBS will go the direct-to-DVD route at this time, though; the strategy seems to be to make Trek a mainstream property again, something that pulls in the casual fans as well as the Trekkies (which the TOS films and TNG were both very good at).

I'm not really concerned about Trek being "deep" sci-fi. The last time they tried to be "deep," we got pastel pajamas and pretty colors pasted over the TOS classic "The Changeling."

I wished I could modify my poll. It seems there could be a couple more choices that could be made.
Not so much of a Stargate SG-1 fan here but along with all these DC Comics properties also getting the direct to DVD treatment really has my mind buzzing on the subject. I would prefer TNG but IMO I am jumping on the "some are getting too old" bandwagon. I would be in favor of any of these choices on that point and would definitely probably buy it.

I would love an Enterprise Direct-to-DVD Continuation!
You and me both. ;) That time period between "Terra Prime" and early TOS / JJ Abrams' film remains a burning passion for me. Romulan War. Birth of the Federation. All that backstory.

Personally, I don't care when/where/what the setting is. I'd give any series a chance, and it'd keep me as a fan, so long as it's well written and acted.

It has potential. I thought that the Direct-to-DVD Futurama movie, Bender's Big Score, was reasonably good. On the one hand there is the absence of a need to cater to a wide audinece; but on the other is the slashed budget. A direct-to-DVD movie could be incompetently constructed glorified navel-gazing; alternately it might be some interesting material. I guess it depends on who is involved and so on. Unfortunately, the only direct-to-DVD movie I could imagine being made is a sequel to Abrams' Star Trek if it tanks at the box office but does good in DVD sales...

Direct-to-DVD is still considered 2nd tier. Big franchise's don't do direct-to-dvd because they can make more money on tv/in the theaters. CBS won't do Trek direct-to-dvd until they've given up on ever doing another series/theatrical release.

The reason why The Ark of Truth and Continuum ended up as direct-to-DVD is because MGM saw SG1 as profitable, but Scifi did not. So Scifi ended the series, and furthermore used its leverage to prevent the show from being moved to another network (they didn't want competition with Atlantis).

So MGM decided to try the direct-to-DVD route, as the last option open to them for continuing a profitable property.

I wasn't aware of those behind-the-scenes issues. It certainly supports the notion that Skiffy is being handled by a group of incompetents.

Overall, though, the general perception of direct-to-DVD is as AviTrek and I pointed out above: second-tier material, cheaply produced knock-offs and sequels... typical B-movie fare in a world that no longer has theaters which show B-movies. Maybe the success of the Family Guy and Futurama releases, and however this SG-1 movie does will change the perception, but it's a long, uphill climb.

Which part is incompetent - blocking the move of part of a franchise to a competing station and thus preserving their monopoly, or retiring a ten-year-old series that hadn't been any good for years but still cost a lot of money?

Just look at all the Asylum direct to DVD movies that knock off movies. It's quite hilarious. I think they just came out with or are going to come out with a Cloverfield knock off. I suspect more people think of these direct to DVD movies as crap. Some potential buyers may think a direct to DVD TRek movie is something similiar.
