Subspace is one of the few Star Trek terms I find as ambiguous. It is mostly used in communication but is also used whenever just the standard 3-dimensions with time must be over-written. I'd guess its about the same as hyper-space but is used differently. The ship is in standard space unless warp-drive is activated and it goes to sub-space, which seems to be programmable(asymmetric, symmetry etc.)
What Einstein figured out concerning FTL is cannon-- but I must remark on how shallow and narrow it could be. All one has to do is accelerate towards a source of light to go faster than light speed. His equations are largely based on mathematical proofs and lacks direct laboratory environments.
