Did Voyager throw out too much too soon?

That was thanks to UPN, not a deliberate choice by the staff. And yeah, whenever I hear anyone saying how the show could've been "better" all they do is make DS9 part two because apparently unless it's DS9 part two it's no good.

I was happy to have a TNG part 2 to be honest, it just should have been executed better and not been released so soon. TNG still had a good few years left in it too.

a big *sigh* at the previous post

This is your answer? SIGH!

It should have been a split show. Episodic on the background stuff, with new aliens every week or so as they sped through the DQ as fast as possible, but serial when it came to the characters. We got hints of this but not enough. More focus on the Maquis vs. Starfleet issue, more individual character development, stronger and more consistent relationships (not just shipper stuff, but friendships, too) ... it would have been so much better.
Really? That's what I had been seeing on the damn show. VOYAGER was basically an episodic series, with occasional mini-arcs throughout each season. And yes, there were character developments throughout the series and not some damn hints. There have been character developments in all of the TREK TV shows, save for THE ORIGINAL SERIES. But I don't see anyone complaining about that. Unless many were demanding that VOYAGER should have been a second-rate version of DEEP SPACE NINE? Which, by the way, was a second-rate version of BABYLON 5.

Whoa, calm down! I love Voyager, I'm not a detractor per se ... but I do think the show writers missed a lot of opportunities that were sitting there on a silver platter waiting to be exploited. What we got was good. I enjoyed it immensely or I wouldn't be here on this forum. But it had the potential to be awesome, if the writers had cared enough to try. I've never seen a single episode of DS9, for what it's worth. It's still on my "to do" list.

It didn't. It started slipping Season 6, but managed to pick up in season 7 with episodes like Tapestry and All Good Things. But it wouldn't have sustained another season. The difference is it ended on a high, until the movies came along...

The problem with the movies is that there was no need for them like there was with the TOS movies. And also "All Good Things" raised the quality bar too high.

It slipped in season 6 but got better in season 7???
I actually thought season 7 was an immensely noticeably large slip in quality but it still gave us some really good episodes.
My point was also that TNG was still hugely successful in its 7th season and they definitely had many more profitable years ahead outside of the movie franchise.

I think the show started off really well and continued until the end of season 4. After that we got nothing but borg and seven of nine. Now seven of nine was an interesting character but the whole show seemed to revolve around her after she joined the crew. Better story lines and less focus around seven in the last 3 seasons would have made the show a whole lot better for me.
