I had to look that up myself. GAFIA stands for "get away from it all," so "GAFIAte" is a mock usage that turns the acronym into a verb form.
Did they overdo the amount of aliens in Titan?

Ah. I had been guessing at "Give A Finger In the Air."
I love the fact that there are loads of aliens onboard the Titan, and that humans make up a minority of the crew (after all humans are only one species out of over 150 that make up the UFP), but one thing that does annoy me is that its the most diverse crew in Starfleet, as though that fact is an oddity.
Budgets, etc have always caused them to be the most dominate race seen in Trek, when the opposite would be true, after all not every human goes into Starfleet.
In fanfic I write, I always try to include as many aliens as possible. Humans may be the single most species onboard, but rarely do they make up more than a third of the crew.

I think I've already covered both these points earlier in the thread. First off, it's not just Titan, it's the whole Luna-class fleet, and it's a pilot program for the rest of Starfleet. Second, it's as you say -- what's actually onscreen is a Starfleet that's overwhelmingly dominated by humans and humanoids. As a fanfic writer, you're free to ignore that, but those of us who write tie-ins have to go by what's established in the shows, and so in order to do a series about a ship crewed largely by nonhumanoids, we have to acknowledge the fact that it's different from what's been shown onscreen.
I missed "Orion's Hounds" so am reading it now. I'm glad I did because having read the newest ones months ago where the crew is very accepting, inclusive, and working well together it is nice to see them still trying to overcome their differences. The interaction between Keru and Torvig is great.
That's what I really like about the series and its diversity, you see them grow together and gain strength from their differences, applying the principle of the IDIC. The overcoming of bias is inspirational and trek at its best.

In the last couple of years with the relaunches being all over the place, Vanguard and Titan have become my clear favorites. I love the difference that Titan is compared to the rest of the books, as it's always about exploration, whether it be political, social, temporal, or spatial or a combination.

GAFIA is paleolithic fanspeak. It means Getting Away From It All -- which many fans do at some point, abandoning their fannish pursuits in favor of IRL (In Real Life) interests.
My Star Trek GAFIA year was 2004. The utter awfulness of Enterprise drove me away from the franchise entirely at the beginning of the third season, and I eventually grew disgusted enough to abandon EVERYTHING about the franchise for all of 2004. In January 2005 I started hearing reports that Enterprise was significantly improved in its 4th season, so I checked it out. Been back ever since.
