Did they just abandond research on more Genesis torpedos?

Seeing as the Genesis cavern seemed pretty stable, I think the real problem with the torpedo was that it was set off in an unstable location. An actual planet or moon would probably have yielded a successful experiment, a solid body to give stability to the protomatter. But unstable matter + nebula gas = big mess.

Khan setting it off in the Mutara Nebula guaranteed it was going to fail. Add to that Kruge's murder spree, and it's easy to see why Starfleet buried it. It was too much of a political liability, and the fact that it was misused in the first place probably put the fear of God into everybody.

I've always been of the opinion that two things could have happened--baring the thing just not working, that is

1) Nebula aside, the Reliant's antimatter stores made an already unstable and dicey process tip over the edge into being unviable. Who knows how protomatter and antimatter mix.

2) Scale. The cave was small scale. Scale it up to a moon and above and the process doesn't have enough oomph to sustain itself and then sustain the result till it becomes stable.

Didn't Troi of all people suggest the Nanite thing when fighting the Borg?

DATA: Doctor Crusher and I have been working on an interesting premise.
CRUSHER: With our recent experience in nanotechnology, we might be able to introduce a destructive breed of nanites into the Borg.

It may have been used, not as a weapon, but as originally intended, to remake the Klingon planet after Praxis exploded.

But probably the Klingons didnt like it, with all the green everywhere and blue sky. They prefer their planets filled with lava and smoke and targs and pointy rocks, you know, Klingon stuff.

(remember our prototype Klingon, Kruge. He found Genesis "exhilarating"-- but only after it turned into a smoldering Mustafar-like hell)

Perhaps that is why the Khitomer peace agreement went sour later.

All actual research materials regarding Project Genesis was wiped from every Federation database, transferred to old-fashioned hardcopy, and locked away in a big wooden box in a secret warehouse that allegedly also houses other very dangerous items, including the Ark of the Covenant.
Kivas Fajo runs the place.
:rommie: Makes sense.

... Wait... HE GOT THE ARK OF THE COVENANT?!

And did he get that copy of the Constitution with the word "suckers" in it as well as the nude photo of Mark Twain? :D
