Did the Enterprise-D not live up to its reputation?

Heh.

Worf: They are locking weapons on us! (Ship takes a hit)
Riker: Shields up! (Looks at Picard...)
Picard: Senior staff to the conference room!
Worf: (wtf)
Troi: I sense hostility.
Riker: We should set a course for the planet's poles...
Data: I may be able to fool their sensors by projecting a 20th Century image of "barney the dinosaur".
Geordi: The initial attack took out our warp drive, but I might be able to envelop their ship in a subspace field rendering their weapons ineffective.
Worf: (wtf)
Picard: All right then. Let's take lunch, meet back here at 1300, and make it so.

The Enterprise-D, as a Galaxy-class vessel, was supposed to be the most advanced ship in all of Starfleet (which we saw in DS9 totalled thousands of vessels).

Yet, when faced with comparable opponents, the Enterprise-D never could hold its own. It never got into a serious battle with a Romulan Warbird, nearly got destroyed by the Tamarians, and only knocked out the Cardassians' weapons (in the Wounded) since Gul Moset's ship was probably a lesser Cardassian ship class. So even though the Enterprise was the Federation flagship, how come it never beat a good opponent?

Sorry for coming late to the game, if I repeat anyone's points please forgive me.

Its clearly stated throughout the show that the D'Deridex warbird is evenly matched. In fact, they were twice as long.

The Tamarians were an extremely alien and unknown race, so I'm sure half the problem there was a lack of intelligence and countermeasures.

Lastly, Picard was only looking to disable Macet's ship (A Galor, which I've seen estimated at a 3:1 ratio of equivalency). He wanted to find out why he'd been fired upon.

I don't remember childs play but I do remember Yesterdays Enterprise, Darmok....
every single turn...

Ack, I made a mistake, I didn't mean Child's Play, I meant Rascals, where Picard, Guinan, Ro, and Keiko were de-aged and Riker was left in command.

ANYway, Rascals reused battle footage from Yesterday's Enterprise, but only with two K'Vort BOPs rather than 3. If you'll recall, the battle in Yesterday's Enterprise didn't go so well for the Enterprise-D, so logically it went worse for our heroes in Rascals. The footage was framed with Riker not just doing the turn-by-turn, but throwing in some of his patented-but-ultimately-useless fancy flying commands, too, IIRC.

Ah, that I remember now...I'll have to revisit that episode for the battle.

(shudder) That would be the least of my reasons to want to revisit it. I seem to recall it being rather embarassing for Our Heroes.

And we see Maxwell, holding nothing back, kicking the crap out of the Cardies with the Nebula Class Phoenix which at best is the equal of a Galaxy class. His one starship - USED AGGRESSIVELY - had the Cardassians very concerned to say the least. JMO, but on a level field, I'm sure a Galaxy used in the same manner, would more than hold it's own against any contemporary AQ threat.

I think one of the most impressive displays of starship battle is in S.O.A, when the those two Galaxys passed by the Galor and took it out in less than a minute.

Up into then it seemed like they had been forgotten, but I think that brief scene put them back in the spotlight.

It made the Galaxys look like large powerful battleships (when they had to be).

In DS9, it had been all been about the Defiant, but I started liking the Galaxys again after that.
