Did the Daleks lobotomize themselves?

I just stuck the episode on. Watching it right now. In the first 10 seconds the Doctor says that they're in 2012 and Rose says that she would be 26 years old.

Yep. And in the first ten seconds of "Aliens of London," the Doctor was convinced he'd landed Rose in 2005, 12 hours after they dematerialized at the end of "Rose." Then he looked around and realized he'd parked in the wrong year. ;)

Of course we could always just say that in Van Statton's 2012, the events of 2009 hadn't happened yet. ;)

Wrap your heads around THAT one kiddos.

Makes sense to me. No one has ever said the Doctor lives in a self-consist Universe, he's making changes all the time.

Perhaps we should consider we are always following the Universe and Time/Space from his uniquely subjective point of view.

Sarah Jane visited a 1980 which would have occurred if she didn't defeat Sutek in the 20s, and unfortunately, it was the only 1980 they had access to until they went back and finished kicking his ass.

Not necessarily. The Daleks were in the skies above London for less than ten minutes, and this after hours and hours of Cyberman occupation -- the streets probably didn't have many folks in them; the sane people would be hiding, and the unfortunates already captured by the Cybermen. I could easily picture the Dalek incursion going unnoticed.

We're talking about London here, probably the most CCTV covered city in the world. There still seemed to be plenty of people on the streets and all it takes is one person with a camera phone to snap a Dalek...one peson out of 8 million.

Seriously you only have to look at the news anytime there's a disaster, people can't wait to sent their pics and vids off to the BBC. Look at the Mumbai attacks last week, they had really clear photos of many of the attackers whilst the attacks were still ongoing.

No, there's no way the Daleks went unnoticed.

Me I just go with the modified timeline notion.

So you've not seen the finale of Season 4 then?

Maybe Torchwood put retcon into every ones water supply?
Or, my personnel nerd hypothesis, UNIT are using the telepathic signal generators in the Archangel satellite network to wipe every ones memory of the various alien attacks? As well as destroying/confiscating all physical evidence.
Except Clyde's dad (SJA, Mark Of The Berserker) remembered the Daleks. So much for that idea.:(

The Doctor said that humans feel more comfortable when they delude themselves into believing that the universe is small, or words to that effect, in Remembrance of the Daleks.

Universal application of retcon? I think it would have been easier for the government to give everyone 20 pounds to shut the fuck up.

Also, the Brig commented in Enemy of the Bane that everyone knew about aliens these days.

I wouldn't be too surprised if the CCTV system was down due to the disruption caused by all the violence following the Cybermen invasion.

Sure, but who's to say that the info would go anywhere? One guy takes a picture of some weird-looking flying salt shakers, so what? People will just assume they're related to the Cybermen.

Seriously you only have to look at the news anytime there's a disaster, people can't wait to sent their pics and vids off to the BBC.

I don't think that's comparable. Remember, London was firmly under Cybermen occupation by that point -- it wasn't even an invasion, like the Doctor said, it was a victory.

No, there's no way the Daleks went unnoticed.

I could easily see them going unnoticed by most of the population, or at least them not getting the kind of attention the Cybermen did. The Cybermen invaded and occupied the entire planet; the Daleks appeared in the skies for a few minutes and didn't even cause that much destruction.

I have. What does that have to do with "Doomsday?"

Even if the vast majority of the population didn't notice the Daleks, some people would-- and Van Statten is a man obsessed with aliens who owns the Internet. There's no way he wouldn't know about them.
