Did Natasha Yarr deserve that sort of death?

I really do think Crosby had more to offer, so it's a shame she died. Having said that, I also thought it was a brilliant, unexpected death. Skin of death was a very weird episode, but it works in my opinion.

I never understood why Yar's death was supposed to be so meaningless either. She died in the line of duty trying to save her shipmates.

What killes me is her second attempt at a meaningful death only to ignominiously be executed because her own yowling brat hated her guts. NOW we're talking meaningless.

I can just see yet another alternate-timeline Yar appearing in the main-verse sheepishly saying "Well that one didn't work out so well, what say we try this again!". She should get the Wile E. Coyote award for comical perseverance.

Agree with the Crosby hate. She even tried to get into Nemesis! I watched Trekkies and she always seemed to be going on about how Yesterdays Enterprise was the best episode, and every stall at at conventions would have a Tasha Yar picture or something. Fair enough to leave, but dont try and get back in again when you didnt even give it a real go in the first place.

I liked Yar's death. I wouldnt have liked the whole last words epic death for a character that wasnt really fleshed out, or liked.

Yar's death isn't bothersome at all imo -- beneficial even. Her re-emergence on the show, however, eventually produced some major damage.

It was fine for "Yesterday's Enterprise"....but then Yar/Sela/whatever really mangled the "Redemption" and "Unification" storylines. It's very unfortunate too, because both of those two-parters possessed tremendous potential, and both became completely sidetracked and muddled because of Crosby's new bizarre character.

Sometimes you do. She asked about an improved situation and they said it wasn't coming. Then she got offered a movie and she would have had to turn it down.

And how did that movie work out for her?

And, yeah they said the situation wouldn't improve for her and since TV executives can see into the future she had no reason to doubt them.

Leaving early worked quite well for Farrah Fawcett, even with paying a huge breach of contract fine to Paramount and being forced to return for several episodes.

Farrah Fawcett had, ahem, "more" to offer future employers considering one poster of her became wank material for millions of teenage boys.

As far as her death being "meaningless" I recall reading somewhere that Roddenberry intended it to be exactly that. The fans didn't make it up. Yes, she was on a rescue mission, but it was meaningless in the sense that there were no pre-emptive attacks on either side. She wasn't doing anything other than walking and Armus killed her. If I tell a guy "don't cross this line" and he does, and I shoot him dead, then that is a meaningless death. Even if he wanted to cross that line to enter a burning building to save some kids, he didn't die trying to save them; he died because he ignored me. That's why Yar was killed; she ignored him. But she did not die in the act of saving Troi's life. She never had the chance.

Absolutely empty, meaningless death.

Oh come on, they were in charge, they knew what they would or would not do. You don't need to be able to see into the future to know if you'll be giving your crappy actress more lines in the foreseeable future. Ask your boss if you're going to get a raise and a promotion anytime soon. if he says "no" do you look for another job or do you think "well, what does he know?" He's in charge! Of course he knows! The producers were saying "as long as we're in control your part is going to remain small." That's not predicting the future, that's telling her the facts of life. Had she stuck it out, the revolving producer door would have eventually brought in Michael Piller and I'm sure she would have been very happy with the result.

At the time, however, she was told she was in a dead end job, so she took her chances and asked to be released from her contract. They agreed and she left. End of story.

Well, I certainly wouldn't go looking for another job at the cost of everything my current job offers me, especially if leaving my current job could damage my viability in the job market. I'd take it as an opportunity to work harder and impress them.

And, at about the same time as Yar's death, Playboy re-released a pre-TNG photo spread of a rather boyish space cadet Denise Crosby. It sold quite well, IIRC.

I always felt that TNG violated a single, unpardonable rule in writing with this episode. "Don't let the backstage drama affect the quality of your work." This certainly did. The entire episode was based around 'killing off Yar", badly. If it weren't for the funeral scene at the end, it would easily be one of Star Trek's worst episodes of all time (TM).

The episode was nothing more than saying 'fuck you' to Denise Crosby and it reeked of that fact.

That's not exactly exclusive to TNG. It's fairly "common" for TV series to ruin the characters of actors who want out of their contracts and off the show. Just ask David Caruso and Kal Penn.

I know it is. It doesn't change that it speaks very badly on the production and writers of shows that act in such an unprofessional manner.

How about the actor who being unprofessional and exits from a contract?:confused:

Don't care. The viewer doesn't need to know that stuff in any given episode. When you see an episode and immediately think "Man, SOMEONE was mad at this actress chick", then the writers/producers are taking their pettiness on their finished product.

Dumbass thing to do, no matter the reasons.
