I know it's difficult for most americans to understand, but trying to translate one language to another another sometimes there is no one to one direct parallel. In this case, this is a second person singular pronoun equivalent to "you" that is mostly used to display loathing and contempt and also as a gesture of rudeness. So yes you kinda have to use bastard, fucker, etc because there is no direct equivalent of this in english.

You must be the life of the party wherever you go with that sense of humor. Also, he's not American.
