Did Kirk's rather *enthusiastic* execution of Nero bug you?

Let me quote TOS Arena:

SPOCK: You mean to destroy the alien ship.
KIRK: Of course.
SPOCK: I thought perhaps the hot pursuit alone might be sufficient. Destruction may be unnecessary.
KIRK: Colony Cestus III has been obliterated, Mr. Spock.
SPOCK: The destruction of the alien vessel will not help that colony, Jim.

But yes, the new movie is totally in the spirit of TOS.

To quote Carol Marcus: "Jim, you're just making this harder."

The protection of the timeline has always been a Trek staple BUT, and this is all you gotta know and believe to get past the issues here: we/they aren't in the same timeline anymore!

They/we crossed through a membrane separating the old and new universes. The old one is intact on the other side of the membrane.

Uhura: An Alternate Reality !!!
Spock: Precisely !!!

^If you mean those quoted lines must be interpreted to mean "altered Prime timelime" then that definition fly's in the face of everyone involved in the project statements concerning the opposite being the case.

On the other hand:

SPOCK: Then you have one other choice. Kill Mitchell while you still can

The Arena quote was fitting because it was almost the same circumstances as in the new movie. The WNMHGB quote doesn't fit, because Nero was no all powerful, god-like, uncontrollable entity.

How godlike do you need to be in order to destroy a planet? How godlike to you need to be in order to blow up 47 ships?

That that Nero is godlike at all, but geeze, a major threat is still a major threat. Tomayto tomahto.

LOL. Nero was already going to die, his ship was going to be destroyed, and the red matter was gone anyway. And the only assistance Kirk and the Enterprise could give them was to beam them from the ship. And without the ship they wouldn't have been a threat.

A murderer is drowning. The cop offers him a hand, the criminal says "Fuck you, I'm going to die instead." And then the cop draws his gun and unloads the entire clip into him. How awesome is that?

It was a response to your "Spirit of TOS" remark. It shows Spock can and will use lethal force when needed. So will Kirk as seen in "A Taste of Armegeddon" wheh he was wiling to kill an entire planetary population. (And Spock agreed)

Kirk is not a cop. It was a military decision in a military situation.

And we know that how again? I mean, it's not like the ship survived a trip through the black hole unscathed. Oh wait, it did, as did a smaller, much more fragile ship.Let's remember that prior to the film's events, both Nero and Spock Prime thought they were going to be killed by the black hole, too. No one in Kirk's shoes is going to take that gamble.

I suppose Janeway didn't need to fire those transphasic torpedoes either, since the anti Borg virus was already in the system.

A distinction people keep forgetting when dealing with an outright battlefield, I think. It's akin to Saddam Hussein -- he refused to plead guilty or help, was executed for crimes against humanity, and this was all handled by US and allied military direction to the end. Also, Nero's a frikkin' war criminal himself.

Spock's reaction to killing somebody seems to vary through out the course of the character's existence.

It seems to depend somewhat on the likelihood that the people being killed will go on to be destructive again.

I seem to recall Spock saying that the Romulan ship in Balance of Terror would need to be destroyed.

In other circumstances I may have said yes, however, Nero was a certified SOB who murdered one of both Kirk & Spock's parents plus sent a whole planet of innocent people to Dimension X. I hate to say it but I probably would have gotten some perverse pleasure at sending his self-righteous behind to the Netherworld as well.

Nero had just destroyed Vulcan, and attempted to destroy Earth. If a guy had robbed your house, burnt it to the ground, murdered your family, raped and murdered your wife, would you be lenient on him?

Actually, yes. I would sit them down, pour them a cup of tea and discuss how we could work out our differences and learn deal with things as the responsible grown-ups we both are. After all, holding a grudge serves no purpose in the grander scheme of things.

Didn't like it. ...Cheap modern-era movie snark detached from reality and/or morality. It was more like something out of Buffy or Schwarzenegger than the final words of a Starfleet officer before killing a shipload of people.

Well... if he was a responsible grown up, he wouldn't have robbed your house, burn it down, murder your family, and rape and murder your wife in the first place. As far as I know, anyway.

What you never saw Les Miserables? After the protagonist Valjean is caught and arrested for stealing from a priest who nursed and sheltered him, the gendarme bring him back to the house, and the priest, or was it bishop, says they are mistaken. He gave Valjean the silver china, but my child you forgot the best of it, and gives him two giant silver candlesticks to take away as well. Valjean is disgusted with himself and vows to himself to begin a new life.

Or how about Miles O'Brien who murdered his cellmate and only friend after being traumatized for decades in an alien mind-prison, and felt so bad about it he nearly committed suicide but for the help of a friend to bring him back from the brink.

Or how about the all the people on this board after 9/11 calling for whole nations to be nuked. ...The horror disgust and shame from those days are still with me...

...Well, Nero and his ship of blue-collar workers trying to make an honest living saw their entire world destroyed. Next thing you know they're lost in time. These are horrific circumstances. The least Kirk could do if unable to save the wretches is allow them to die without a snarky quip to the camera.

That's another thing: why fire on the Narada when it was already being consumed by a black hole? Doesn't make sense after Kirk showed such economy with the photons on the Kobayashi Maru? I know, I know, it's just a popcorn movie employing a popcorn movie device.
