Did Keiko kill O'Briens spider??

A desert? In climate controlled Earth? You think when they learned to control the weather they didn't put the rain wherever they felt there was extra space to make it more habitable? ;)

I'd expect them to keep desert habitats. Joshua trees, Sagauro, rattlesnakes, and spiders have to live somewhere. In the 24th century, if you don't like the habitats available on Earth, you move to a different planet that was not previously inhabited, or space station. You don't terraform Earth habitats.
 
Deserts, in and of themselves, are a normal part of a planet's ecosystem, are they not?

I took the "weather control" bit in TNG as simply getting rid of dangerous storms, not absolutely controlling the weather down to the smallest detail.
