Militarily they could have used both gold and silver.

Modern U.S Army insignia, silver oak cluster denotes Major, same design in gold is Lt. Colonel.

I think they did their homework, at least Orci and Kurtzman did. I believe in the Trekmovie interview they remarked that all choices were deliberate. I suppose they had an influence on the aesthetic as well.

This is true...I took a film class in college and every single thing that appears on screen in a movie, play, TV show ...whatever is put there with a purpose and very deliberately......even what kind of houseplant appears in the backround...there is a reason why they chose that particular plant....so nothing is accidental!

To answer a question asked: The landing party jackets had silver stripes, the uniform tunics had gold stripes.

And, I have to agree with Franklin, bring on the velour (or at least a decent wool)!

Honestly, I think silver looks better. It also contrasts against the gold command-division uniforms. Gold on gold may not look quite right.

If this was so trivial a detail, then why would it even BE there? If it's worth being in the movie, it's worth discussing, especially when you consider this is a timeline change, and it may have been a clever choice, not a careless or accidental one.

we should talk about Spock's ears. They grew and shrank all the time on Nimoy. Now they seem rather understated on Quinto. Should they grow again for the next movie?
