Did I violate airline security yesterday?

Yesterday when I got in line at the Southwest Airlines check-in, I asked the attendant if there were any new security rules for carry-on luggage (in light of the Detroit incident). I had two pieces that I wanted to carry aboard. She said there were no new rules. Then she asked me whether I had any liquids in my luggage. I lied and said "No." But to be honest, I did have a tube of skin cream in one of my bags. Is skin cream a liquid, as far as TSA is concerned?

My bags went through the X-ray machine without incident. I would hope that no one invents skin-cream bombs in the future.

Maybe. It depends on how much it was, up to a certain amount is ok. Things like toothpaste count as "liquid" too in that regard.
But what does it matter if you weren't caught? The worst thing that could have happened to you is that they make you throw away the cream.

Well, since it seems you can take liquid PETN on transatlantic flights, I don't see why Southwest should stop you from carrying skin cream.
