A valid question if you take a look at the ratings graph below. There seems to be a definite connection between the degree of exhibition of Chief O'Brien's man boobs and the ratings figures of the series. Whenever a flabby piece of manly teat flashed on the screen there was an immediate decline in viewership numbers.
Now, was this a conscious decision by the producers? A way to counter the stereotype of an exercised male chest celebrated in the majority of television programs? And as that, was is just another way in which Deep Space Nine was a progressive show way ahead of its time?
