Too Much Fun

At first glance, this thread probably looks like it's in the wrong forum, but I'm actually referring to the character of "Q2" played by Corbin Bensen in "Deja Q", rather than the Voyager episode of the same name. I've seen "Deja Q" a few times recently, first on the Q collection DVD and then again on TV and after revisiting it several times a few years after I last saw it, I've realized how irritating this character is, and how detrimental it is to the episode. It's a shame, because "Deja Q" is without a doubt one of my favourite episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and I think it was absolutely perfect UNTIL the scene with the two Qs in the shuttlecraft. I blame the actor for this, more than those who wrote the character.

I know it's natural for the Q to be played as arrogant since that's how John De Lancie always played his character, but De Lancie always made him endearing and fascinating in spite of that. He always seemed clever, witty, creative, and in his own way affectionate enough to make us like him even though he was a cocky bastard. I think Corbin Bensen's Q tried to embody some of those same qualities and failed miserably. I couldn't stand his painfully exaggerated and unnatural-looking body language and the wooden, distractingly drawn-out cadence with which he spoke his dialogue. The way he kept looking at his hands as if he were so bewildered over being in a human body (once would have been enough), and the very 'actorly' way he rambles about why he can't leave Q human, why Q shouldn't condescend to him, and the way he announces that he's giving back Q's powers was just so FAKE.

It made me want to punch him, and not because he did a good job of playing a smug character. His performance was so filled with affectations. It was such obvious 'acting' in the most broadly theatrical and over-the-top sense of the term. I can't think of any reason Bensen won this role other than stunt-casting: it seems he was chosen because he was famous for a show called "L.A. Law", rather than because he was right for the part. Based on this performance, I'm baffled as to what the casting people saw in him. I've never seen "L.A. Law", so I can't imagine.

The other established actors who have been cast on Star Trek over the years brought a certain unique charisma to their performances that justified their casting (i.e. Kelsey Grammer, Matt Frewer, David Warner, Daniel Davis, Terry O'Quinn, Ronny Cox, and Bebe Neuwith), but Benson had none of that. Compared to them or the regular cast, he only seemed like an amateur who was play acting.

I wish they had cast someone who could have played the role more naturally. Someone who could be believable as a being who is as cool and confident as Q, but also has a reverence for morality and selflessness, instead of someone who just seemed to be saying lines with no convinction or sincerity, with the body language of a cartoon character. I thought he played the role lazily, without subtlety or nuance. I know it's a minor thing to get worked up over since his role was little more than a cameo, but it's a big deal to me now because it almost ruins what is otherwise in my opinion one of the best written, acted, and directed episodes in the whole series. Does anybody else see what a PLAGUE on that episode he is? At least De Lancie Q's wonderful celebration in the following scene helps wash away the stink of it almost immediately.

I liked him. I mean, he was only in the show for five minutes. So he acted like a jackass, he's a Q. It seemed natural.

Yeah, I agree with Myasishchev. He acted...well, like a Q. I enjoyed Bernsen (I had to look up how to spell his last name) in both of his Q appearances. I enjoyed him, in spirit, in the Q novels I.Q. and Q-in-Law, too. I mean, when I read those books, that's who I imagined playing Q2.

Too Much, I have no idea why, but I've been disagreeing with you a fair amount lately. Nothing personal, I swear.

Yeah, I noticed that too, but I don't mind because you're always civil about it. I really respect that...it's one reason I added you to my friend list. After how petty and mean-spirited people have been on other forums, I appreciate how much more polite people like yourself are here. I hope I get some support in here, my anti-Q2 campaign seems off to a pretty weak start. :p

^^ Well, thanks!

The voting as a whole is off to a pretty weak start. Don't give up hope - those anti-Q2 votes could start a-pouring in any moment now. Or not...;)

I voted the third option. I didn't really like or dislike him. His was just too small a part to really tell, methinks.

Oh, and Too Much Fun and JustKate, I actually like both of you guys. You are two of the newer board members whose posts I really like to read, although I often find myself in disagreement with you. I think what I just want to say is that I hope you stick around. :)

I didn't really have an opinion of him. Most of the time I was too busy thinking, "it's Corbin Bersen" - who was a big star at the time. I think that JDL plays his Q the best. All the others have seemed lacking to me. Most of them can't seem to walk the line between engagement and threat the way that John de Lancie can. I suppose all Qs have different personalities but JDL, the original, and still the best.

Thank you for the compliment. It's nice to be appreciated. :) On a less positive note, you people are being way too kind to Bensen and his wretched Q portrayal. You're also making me feel like I've been too harsh, which is not something I'd like to admit. :( I implore one of you to watch that episode again and see how hard it is to witness his hideous performance without cringing.

I have to admit that his performance seemed a little self conscious... I'm not an actor but have to wonder if some of them feel uncomfortable when approaching a science fiction role.

I've just done that and see where you're coming from. He goes a bit over the top, that's true. His gestures and the way he delivers his lines are just a bit too much. I think it's entirely possible what IrritatingGameOfChess suggests, Bernsen might have felt uncomfortable with the role and/or the genre.

But then again, his appearance is so short, it didn't really bother me and certainly didn't keep me from enjoying this episode. :techman:

I thought he was hilarious. He was supposed to be. One of the best serious/comedic episodes of all trek!

RAMA

I never really thought much about the 2 minutes he was on screen other than like people said "hey it's Corbin Bernsen".

The Q I really disliked was Susie Plakson as Q's girlfriend. Maybe it was more the lines they gave her, but she just took that superior/condescending/arrogance thing way to far. Everything was "I am the powerful Q and you are the lowly humans". Too bad because I really liked her as K'Ehleyr.

If it helps at all, his character in LA Law was a Trek fan. It wasn't a big part of the character but it crept in every now and again.

I don't really have an opinion of him, as he was only there for a minute or something. If he had been longer around, however, I would probably be annoyed by him.

Yeah, it's part of the reason 'big name' casting shouldn't really work. Unless that performer can REALLY bury themselves in the part then, don't do it.

IE: Frank Gorshin as Commissioner Bele in 'Let That Be Your Last Battlefield'.
