Netflix is delving further into the video game adaptation business. After bringing
The Witcher to life, the streamer will next be adapting one of gaming history's darkest franchises.
It was announced at BlizzCon in Anaheim, California, on Saturday that Netflix is adapting
Diablo as an animated series. Blizzard Entertainment boss Johanna Faries shared the news at the event, and it was reaffirmed with a subsequent social media post. This will mark the first-ever TV series adaptation for
Diablo, which has long been a dominant force in gaming. After hitting the scene 30 years ago with the launch of the original game,
Diablo has continued to be very popular with fans, making the adaptation long overdue.

Variety, Blizzard's official description of the project reads, "After decades of bringing entire universes to life through our games, we’re partnering with some creative powerhouses to tell even more stories beyond gaming across new screens. A new animated series set in the world of
Diablo is in development with Netflix. More details will be shared in the future, but this is only the beginning, with even more taking shape across our universes."
The first
Diablo game was released in 1996, and after becoming an instant hit, a franchise was born with
several acclaimed sequels following in subsequent years. The franchise is set in a world called Sanctuary, a realm caught between an eternal conflict between Heaven and Hell. It's a dark fantasy action RPG series that's well known for its ultra-violent combat and demonic imagery, which has made
Diablo subject to controversy for its content. Nevertheless, it continues to endure as a major gaming franchise. The next mainline installment of the series,
Diablo V, is in the works for a planned release in 2029.
