Dexter season 6 promo

Season five was a fiasco, and season four is overrated, but damn do they know how to cut a good trailer. That makes season six look terrific.

I dunno that trailer left me kind of cold. Just a lot of random cuts. But it was cool seeing Eddie Olmos in there.

Yeah - but I'm still apprehensive. The show has always been "interior" - all about Dexter's mental state - and now they've added a new interior theme, religious belief, that is a challenge to dramatize in an external way, which is a big handicap in a visual medium.

They've been struggling since S2 with their existing interior theme of "how does Dexter rationalize his behavior via the Code" and now they're adding to it? Either they've hit upon a brilliant way to revitalize the series (replacing the Code with Christianity?) or they're headed for a massive train wreck.

But even if they sorta blow the concept, just having EJO and Colin Hanks should bring it up to a solidly watchable level. And at least the audacity of this new element signals that the producers understand they need to shake things up and can't simply continue as they've been doing.

And it's interesting that Homeland will be debuting with Dexter. I'm interested in that one, too. But Showtime is an extra $20/month, and this fall is jam-packed with new shows I want to check out. Guess I'll wait to netflix both series.

I've never found any Colin Hanks performance to be very interesting but I haven't seen him in much. If people thought Johnny Lee Miller was blah after John Lithgow selling the insane character stylings of Trinity, wait til they bitch about Hanks.

Olmos of course is an excellent actor but the stink of BSG is awful hard to ignore. It took repeated episodes of The Closer before it wore off Mary McDonnell.

That said, in all probability the "religion" in Dexter will bear about the same relation to real religion as Jonny Lee Miller's character did to real motivational speakers. Dexter's magical abilities to spot murderers, flawlessly kill them and wriggle out of impossible situations except when the script requires a little temporary "jeopardy" long ago approached heights suggesting divine intervention. Dissolving all the hopelessly knotted mess of plot holes, bizarre characters "arcs," thematic reversals into "GOD did it!" has worked for other series. Who better than EJO to sell this cure?
