DEXTER Renewed for Sixth Season

Executives say even a seventh is likely, although contract negotiations will have to occur after six.

The show just had its second highest ratings ever on Sunday night, delivering 2.5 million viewers, up 43% from the fifth season premiere.

Awesome. I just started watching this show, and I'm totally digging it. Glad to hear there's a bunch more to come.

Nice to hear. I wonder if they will structure S6 in a way so that IF they can't negotiate all the main players back for S7 it could end in a satisfactory way?

They'd either have to work out a deal before season 6 starts up or during it. If they wait till after they film next season they might not get people back they need or may leave something dangling.

If they go forward with a seventh season too, I really hope it's the last one. Of course, if ratings continue, they'll probably keep renewing it and renewing it (until Michael C. Hall decides to leave).

So what's this show about and why are so many such big fans of it?

It's about a serial-killer who kills other serial-killers. His day-job is working as a police examiner, and he constantly struggles with his urges (taught to be used in a "productive" manner by his police officer father), trying to live something resembling a normal life (despite a warped emotional existence), and traumatic repressed memories. Much of the plot-lines revolve around Dexter working out his own moral compass, trying to avoid being caught, and trying to deal with/build a family.

So what's this show about and why are so many such big fans of it?

There are probably so many fans since the protagonist is rather unusual (not just for being a serial killer, but also for being such a socially inept man) and Michael C. Hall's performance is rather brilliant (he manages to sell the most mind-numbingly obvious voice over every time).

The supporting cast is also very good, especially the actress who plays his sister. The tone of the show is also unexpected (or at least, was for me). I was thinking more Hannibal Lecter and what I ended up with was something more like Batman.

Gee, I cannot believe there will be a sixth and maybe even a SEVENTH season!

This season took SO long to get going and has been really dull for most of it! I think the show has gone on too long and Lumen is just awful. Plus Dexter is getting REALLY sloppy this year and has almost been caught by the Robocop guy. They should just let Dexter end this year because this is the typical American thing where a great concept gets milked to death and ends up a pale version of itself(X Files, Lost).

Can anybody who's seen all (or most) of S5, give me a general idea what it's like and if it's any good (without spoiling me)?

It's about a serial killer who only kills bad guys, and while that in itself is dark, the show isn't all demented. There are moments of humor, moments or normalcy, there are mysteries, each season is basically one story arc. Would definitely be r-rated if it were a movie. The first couple seasons are very well-written.

Here's how the very first episode begins if that helps:

No, I asked about S5 = Season 5. I've seen all of S1 to S4, except maybe two episodes.

I love the show.

It starts off slow but really picks up toward the end, if that means anything to you.

The LaGuerta-Batista pairing still brings the show to a grinding halt when it comes to their relationship.

Julia Stiles' character really becomes quite important and interesting as the show goes on.

I guess my problem with picking up a series like this would be getting involved with being emotionally invested in a character like Dexter. I seen people talk about this show a lot and it seems like it's about the "spectacle" of the murders/deaths. (Granted it seems Dexter only kills serial killers.)

While some series can be interesting to watch with sociopathic and murderous characters (The Sopranos), little I've seen about Dexter has led me to believe it has these merits.

Does it offer a challenging opposing force for Dexter?

I assume you mean a slow start, like S4.

Thank you for replying. :-)

Let's just say Dexter has more than one opposing force to deal with, and he's only aware of one of them.

If it helps Trekker, I'm definitely emotionally invested in the character of Dexter, and imagine that's the greatest appeal of the show. The "spectacle" as you put it hardly enters into it.
