Devil's Due

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Vice Admiral
Admiral
First I like this oft-trashed episode. Somehting always hits me right when the ad guy (or gal) gets his or her commuppance. It's always more interesting to see that than straight drama, particularly if there are too many such dramas. Despite it's light and frivalous plot, I'd prefer this episode to the dull as dishwater "Half a Life".

Question, though, what was it about this episode that made it the hghest rated episode of theseries aside from the pilot?

Hm, I have no idea, but I guess it is either a coincidence or the direct result of the quality of one of the preceding episodes. Although, looking at the episode list, I don't think this is the case.

Personally, I like both Devil's Due and Half a Life. And even though I appreciate the TOS-ness of the former, I really prefer the drama of the latter.

Sure, I like a good drama, and a good story with good characters, and Half a Life had all three, but I can't make it through. It even had good performances. So you think itwould work.. but in this case, every bit of anything that makes Trek remotely fun and interesting was seeped away from that episode, and it just drags, and it's preachy and just.. well... dull!

And I'm a guy that digs Where Silence has Lease quite a bit, as well as The Royale, and It's Only a Paper Moon.

Also I did mean bad guy..

I like Where Silence Has Lease, I'm suprise people didn't like that episode. The Royale isn't to bad, I couldn't stand Clues and Devil's Due.

I thought you might be referring to The Neutral Zone. Not sure if that one guy was an "ad guy" though :)

I think The Devil's Due and Half a Life are fine sf concepts. I think that Half a Life is an interesting and probably worthy look at a social issue while Devil's Due probably isn't. For that reason I'd say Half a Life is the better episode. I like both of them, not a great deal, but they're okay for me. My favourite part of Devil's Due is "Troi" seducing Picard. I never saw that coming in any subtext!

Yet another episode that angered me only because they took a gorgeous actress and stuck a Funny Forehead on her for no good reason.

I thought she was more chesty than gorgeous, but I guess its all about where one's eyes focus. ;)

Where did you get that? The episode scored a 13.0 rating, which was quite high but several season 6 episodes had an even higher rating, as did Unification with a 15.4 and All Good Things with a 17.4.

A better question might be how Aquiel got a 14.1 rating.

Anyhow, I thought Devil's Due was a lot fun.

Highest rated or highest viewing figures? I can't believe it got higher ratings than Yesterday's Enterprise or Best Of Both Worlds? Even though it is an episode I enjoy.

It was originally an ST: Phase II story.

ST:TNG was really picking up steam as a cultural phenomenon by the end of season 4 (it was actually cool to be a Trek fan again) and I don't find DD's 'highest rating since the pilot' a surprise.

There's probably some logical explanation for this ratings spike. Reruns on broadcast television? Patrick Stewart on Johnny Carson? A Trek article in Time magazine?

It would be interesting to go back in time and investigate. ;)

According to that source, it's highest since the pilot - which is correct - and not aside from the pilot. ;)
:shifty: Oops, you are quite right. Sorry, I misread. And so did FSM, I guess.

Or like David Livingston puts it in Captains' Logs: Maybe there wasn't a basketball game broadcast that evening.

I assume from this that we are talking viewing figures and not "ratings" as we understand it here.

Thanks. :)

The "devil" (aka Ardra) decides to take advantage of a contract the Vantaxians signed a thousand years prior.

Turns out the Ardra is a con-woman and eventually gets outmatched by Picard.

This was one of (I think) two scripts that were originally written for Phase II.
