Well, a new trailer is out promising even more details at E3 :D

I can't state enough how much I'm looking forward to this game. The first one is without a doubt my favorite PC game and ranks up there with what I consider some of the best games of all time. I do wonder though if it will take the streamlined approach of Invisible War or if it will keep the complexity of the first game.

I got it out of the bargain bin some years back. Installed it twice but never got very far before loosing interest. Though it's not a bad game exactly, it's just more of e generic shooter with a vague pretence of an RPG. Not really a Deus Ex game, sadly.

I like that the new one is a prequel as it frees them from the consequences of whatever Denton did at the end of the first game and go back to the same world before he destroyed it. Not sure I like the character design of the new guy though. That goatee looks like it could take someone's eye out, but I suppose it's better than the stubbly, potato headed muscle heads video game protagonists have tended towards of late. Personally I would have preferred a cyberpunk style female character in the mould of Anna Navarre. Seriously, it's been close to 15 years since Tomb Raider and you can still count the number of female video game protagonists on one hand!

That video gives me hope that the team making Deus Ex 3 knows what they are doing. The original Deus Ex is my favorite PC game of all time.

The sequel, Invisible War, I thought was a let down. The story, atmosphere, and music in IW are all quite good, but the gameplay, level design, and interface was a step backwards from the original game. I think a lot of the problems with IW are caused by the limitations of the original Xbox hardware, and that they changed the interface to work with a gamepad. I think that IW is still an okay game, as long as you can get past the clunky interface. I would rate the first game 10/10 and the sequel 5/10.

I honestly don't think that IWs downgrade was due to it being placed on a console. After all, not only were they able to map Deus Ex's controls to the PS2 controller, but the controls worked better and were far less convoluted than the PCs versions. If anything I think it was an honest attempt to make a system that works better (like what they did with Mass Effect 2). The problem of course is that the many options available in Deus Ex made the game what it was.

It will be interesting to see what direction they take with this new game. If anything, technology has advanced to the point where they can do some truly amazing things with the game if they chose to do so

The problem with comparing the menu systems of DE & DE:IW to the ones on ME & ME2 is that the Deus Ex menus weren't broken and didn't need to be streamlined. The inventory on Mass Effect 1 was just a klunky disorganised mess and Mass Effect 2 didn't "fix" it so much as totally remove it.

What 'Invisible War' did was streamline the whole gaming experience so it felt like a diluted shadow of the original. The video game equivalent of a direct to DVD movie sequel, with an almost totally different cast and very little connection to the original. It's the Starship Troopers 2 of video games.

Which is why I said in the case of Deus Ex, it didn't work ;)

The entire point of my post is that I believe the creators of IW thought they could make a better system, just like how the creators of Mass Effect did. Unlike the Mass Effect 2 team however, the IW team failed
