Destiny Trilogy pre-reading

vess

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Okay, so I was going to search Memory-Alpha or Google but I didn't want to risk spoilers.

I'm going to read the Destiny Trilogy. That said, are there any books that I have to read before to understand the story?

Thanks

There's nothing you have to read before Destiny, although I would suggest reading Greater Than the Sum and a couple of Titan novels to get a feeling for who the crews are and where they are in their lives. Also, keep in mind that Destiny is very far along in the timeline, so it may reveal some details about other books that a spoiler-phobe would rather not know.

I'm working my way up to Destiny right now. Decided to start with Resistance and work my way forward. I haven't read the more recent Titan books (anything past Sword of Damocles), but I think I can make do.

After skimming the first few chapters of the first Destiny book I realized I wanted more of an understanding of the events leading up to it.

I read Titan: Taking Wing first, to meet Riker's crew. That was it. Was it essential? I think it helped getting the intros to Dr Ree and friends.

I admit I was a little weary of the "impostors" on the Enterprise-E in place of Data, Troi and Worf (who's now first officer in place of Riker), and I never really warmed them (even after I worked backward through the TNG relaunch afterward). But it didn't ruin my enjoyment of Destiny.

Not really, there are a few suggested titles to read first but on the whole, no.

Nah... nothing is necessary. I read all of the TNG books back to back before Destiny, and while it did enhance my experience, I don't think they are essential.

No.

More important for the full effect is a general familiarity with modern Trek shows.

In my case, for example, I had minimal aquaintance with Trek lit outside of the DS9-relaunch, but in depth knowledge of the TNG and DS9 television series. That was more than enough to thoroughly enjoy these novels.

Sword of Damocles actually is the last Titan novel prior to Destiny, so you're all caught up. :bolian:

The main issue is that I can't find a definitive chronological list of novels. I mean, the Pocket Books novels are supposed to sustain a continuity (differing definitions of the word aside) with each other, right?

I have a good grasp of DS9 as a series and consider myself well versed in TNG, so that's not an issue. I just want to know the characters and universe in which the story is taking place so if there are a couple of books that would achieve that, then I want to read them.

I would just jump in and read Destiny in your place. I ended up going back and reading some of the novels leading into the Destiny trilogy, such as Resistance, Before Dishonor and Greater Than the Sum, but I had no regrets about reading Destiny first. On the contrary, I doubt I would have bothered with any of these novels had I not read Destiny. Greater Than the Sum is pretty enjoyable, but I wouldn't recommend either of the two others at all, whereas I would highly recommend Destiny.

I still haven't had a chance to read any of the Titan novels leading into Destiny, but I can therefore confirm that not reading them will not detract from your understanding/enjoyment of Destiny in the slightest.

Oh. That's convenient!

(looks around to make sure nobody's watching, does his "I'm Awesome" dance)

If you're trying to find anything that puts the books in reasonably chronological order, I'd recommend Memory Beta, not Memory Alpha. I believe the latter focuses primarily/exclusively on canonical material, which the novels are not.

Yep, and MB is pretty much everything else. The timeline on there is pretty thorough, it's got the majority of Trek episodes, movies, books, short stories, comics, and video games. It's not quite everything, but it's pretty damn close.

If this is what you're looking for, the pre-Destiny continuity (from Star Trek: Nemesis forward only) is:

TNG: Death in Winter
Titan: Taking Wing
Titan: The Red King
Articles of the Federation
TNG: Resistance
TNG: Q&A
TNG: Before Dishonor
Titan: Sword of Damocles
TNG: Greater Than the Sum

If you want to go even further back than that, the year leading up to Nemesis is chronicled in the 9 A Time To... books, which introduce a major character in Titan.
Also the post-DS9 series contains a certain person's character developement fullfilled in Destiny which might seem to come out of left field.

And if you like Voyager, after you read Destiny, Full Cirlce is a MUST.
