Destiny Omnibus: should I pull the trigger?

Okay, I bought the omnibus this morning and am excited to start reading it. HOWEVER...I have not kept up wit the post-NEM TNG books. So how would I go about catching up on what's happened since NEM? I also haven't kept up with the DS9 or Titan books...any ideas as to how I can catch up?

I'd never heard of Greg Bear or his work.

As a young "Star Trek" fan, Greg Bear contributed artwork to Bjo Trimble's original "Star Trek Concordance" (Ballantine's "wheel" edition, and I'm fairly sure the fan edition before that).

He was an early fan-turned-pro, and wrote an early ST novel for "Pocket" called "Corona", which I rather liked when it first came out. Then he became a Really Big Name in SF circles.

Don't sweat it too much. Most of what you'll need to know to follow the story is incorporated into the trilogy as backstory. You should be fine just plunging in.

Thanks! I read up on Picard, The "Trois" and Titan, and Ezri on Memory Beta to give me some idea of where everyone's been since the end of DS9 and NEM. I'll be diving in tonight!

Memory Beta is fine. You're good to go. The Hernandex/Caeliar arc is entirely self-contained so you're good on that point too.

Enjoy the read, and if I can offer any advice at all, it would be 'don't forget to try to get some sleep' somewhere in amongst all that reading. I forgot to. Yes, they were that good.

^ Not yet, sorry. I think they might be holding off to avoid cannibalizing eBook sales of the original volumes, which saddens me as I would prefer to have people read the new omnibus version. C'est la vie.

Well, they could replace the individual versions with the new versions and still make the extra money that way.

Definitely read it. I'd say Destiny is a must read for anyone interested in modern Trek novels, both because of their significance to the current status of the universe and because of their quality.

Having the single books already I think I'll wait until I can finf 'em used.

(I'm kinda annoyed I have to buy it AGAIN for a 'improved' version, honestly.)

You don't have to buy it again. There are minor tweaks to the prose, nothing happens differently. It's the same story.

A thousand times yes. :)

I greatly enjoyed the Omnibus version. I think that's how it should be read, as one giant novel. David, I saw some convention footage on Youtube recently in which Nicole de Boer says that you presented her with a copy of the story. Did she ever get back to you with any feedback?

Huh? You think you should be able to send 'em back for a trade-in maybe?

David Mack assured us the tweakings were quite minor, not compulsory. Many ST novels get tweaked for minor errors/improved flow between editions. You don't have to buy them all over again.

My own rule is that I'll happily buy a new edition if there's a significant addition: a new foreword, a bridging chapter (as in the "Stargazer" novels in their "Signature Edition"), an essay, an interview, or sometimes even brand new cover art. I bought the compilation of the "DS9: Millennium" trilogy because Allyn Gibson had done a timeline for it. Only a few pages, but something worth having.

I barely get a chance to read every ST novel once these days, let alone the luxury of slight-tweaked reprint omnibuses!

^It's hardly unique to Star Trek, for that matter. Authors who get new editions of their work issued frequently take the opportunity to correct errors, refine the prose, update the content, or even drastically rewrite the entire work in some cases.

According to Richard Arnold, the very first screening of the DS9 episode, "Rules of Acquisition", went to air missing the "c" from the title - and there was brief debate about whether to tweak it for future screenings, or whether fans would start complaining about which version was canonical.
